| would appreciate insight or suggestions! My little Biggie is always eating something.Putting anything he can't get in his mouth he eats. From pieces of carpet,to lint. When we go out to Potty he's constantly picking up woodchips running in a corner and eating them. after a while the woodchips and everything else is coming out his other end!!! This morning he spit up a half of tissue and woodchips he picked up out of the backyard. I was wondering should i put him on his harness and leash everytime we go out back, he'll usually just go Potty on his own- but with him putting everthing in his mouth I don't want him to keep eating all this nasty stuff? Please tell me what to do??? Thanks in Advance Last edited by smileyyork; 03-02-2005 at 04:46 AM. |

| My Oscar used to LOVE to eat any 'fresh dirt' he could find.....would never go to the trouble to dig it up himself.....we have that nasty hard, red clay and he stayed a mess.... I guess the obvious answer would be to pick up as much stuff as you can...but I have no idea what type of yard you have...that may be impossible. Maybe someone can suggest something to spray or sprinkle over certain areas that would make him avoid it......that may not work if you have to re-apply after rain or such.... Or maybe you can spend some time outside with him and make a BIG GRUNT every time he starts to pick up something.... This is a tough one....hope some of these smart folks can do better than me!!!! |

| Thanks for posting this because i have the same question...Dolce eats any and everything...loves to eat the dirt in our big potted plant in the house...any stray piece of whateva. It makes me so nervous, u constantly hear me throughout the house "Dolce what have u got in ur mouth?" Of course she looks at me like "none of ur business" and then takes off running. I do my best to watch her and clean out her mouth, but i wish she just wouldnt do it...is this just a phase and do they grow out of it? i hope so...sorry couldnt be of any help, since my baby does the same thing...maybe there are other people on here that can help us.

| Puppies are like babies. Puppy proofing is just like baby proofing your home. Many will eat anything they can find and then some. Some things can damage the intestines. I would take your pup out on the leash and hope he grows out of it. When in the house out of your site he needs to be in a "safe Place". Really keep an eye on electrical cords. |

| My little Hailey also eats EVERYTHING!! She is inside 90% of the time but she still manages to find something tasty in the carpet!! I am scared she is going to find a coin or safety pin or something else more harmful. I feel like i am constantly cleaning!! It is really like have a little baby. |

| Mia does the same thing and she is 20 months old! She is so much like a baby in that department, I have to be on the constant look out for things she may gobble up. If she finds a coin, rock, stick, leaf, thread, paper, bottle cap...everything..it's goes straight to her mouth. Last summer she came trotting past me while out in the backyard with a dried baby garden snake in her mouth. She was so happy tossing it around. She also found the remains of a dead bird and I had to chase her to get a bird leg (foot and all) away.

| Archie eats everything too, but when we go out, I try to say NO, and stamp my foot and he runs. People throw the weirdest things out in the streets of NY, by the way! Also, when he goes out, I've started walking him on a short leash so his head is always up and he just sort of walks alongside me. At first, I had to use a regular around the neck leash, like a training one (sorry guys, I know it's evil!), and now he's back on the harness, but I keep a short leash and walk straight, like a big march. If he tries to run over, I just tug the leash a little and he comes back. The trick, I find is in holding the leash properly, and making sure that he is never walking in front of me, but next to me or behind me. I'm trying to train him to stay alongside at all times so he doesn't have an opportunity to pick up stuff. In the house, I've just had to essentially child-proof everything. Keep cabinets closed, put harmful stuff away, pick up coins, etc. My opinion---it's just a matter of training your dog to keep looking straight ahead and walk and listen to you and concentrate on the business at hand, namely walking. They have an instinct to dig for stuff, bring it back to you, etc. All I have to do is allow my dog to do that, but only when I tell him it's OK (we have a game where I hide his ball under the blanket and he's busy for half an hour trying to dig it out). That's just my opinion, and I'm working on getting Archie to just concentrate on walking next to me. |
