| Turning a Yorkie over to rescue My son is finally facing the possibility of turning my granddaughter's little Yorkie, Samantha, over to a rescue organization. I have her now, but cannot keep her. I will have her spayed before letting her go to anyone. My son is gone 12 hours a day, works 10-hour days and drives almost an hour each way. He has asthma and his doctor thinks the dog is a problem. I'm not sure of that, but he hasn't had any problems since Samantha has been at my house, a little over a month now. It will be hard for them to let Samantha go, but I think it would be the best thing for her and them. My granddaughter is 14 and Samantha is her dog. I think a rescue organization would be a better solution than just finding someone willing to take her. Rescue organizations do all the right things. I feel bad about it, but am gently pushing my son to make the decision to let her go and start talking to my granddaughter and asking her to accept the best thing for Samantha. Jeanette |

| There are a lot of members here on Yorkie Talk who are associated with rescues, I am sure one of them will give you advice. I agree with you on giving her to a rescue as opposed to rehoming her yourself. Rescues know how to screen for a forever home and will do whatever they can to make sure she finds it. Also I am happy to hear you are going to get her spayed. Please make sure you do that before either you surrender her to a rescue or rehome. Good luck and I hope your Grandaughter understands.

YT Addict | yes a resue is better, poor thing does not need a home and then they not keep her. I can't imagine...I know everyone circumstances are different...but the 14 year old girl can't be gone as much as the working parents? and when I'm in school, we are gone from 5:45 am till sometimes 4pm ..and axel is just fine. So there has to be more to this. So sad! I can't imagine giving up my baby! |

| How old is Samantha? I am not a rescue but I do know a friend who has been looking so hard for another Yorkie. She has a male (he is neutered). I could personally guarantee that she would be an excellent Yorkie Momma. If you want to, pm me the information and I will get it to her.

| Thanks for the responses. A little background ... my son and daughter-in-law are divorced and my granddaughter lives with her mother, but spends a lot of time with her dad. They live close. My granddaughter wanted a puppy. Son was not for it, but fell in love with Samantha, of course. She wasn't quite six weeks old when they got her and I was scared to death. She's four years old now, weighs six pounds, and is very sweet. She will be spayed in the next couple of weeks. She is smart, minds good, and gets along well with everyone and both of my dogs. Potty training went down the drain when she came to my house, but we're working on it. When they got the puppy, they lived in a house with a fenced yard. Now my son and ex-daughter-in-law both live in apartments. My ex-daughter-in-law didn't want to be bothered with Samantha (she's remarried now) and was talking about giving her away, which upset my granddaughter, so my son took her. Then last November, he started having bronchitis and asthma attacks and got really sick. His doctor thought it was because of the dog. I don't think so, but doctors don't agree that some dogs are hypoallergenic. Anyway, my son hasn't had any problems since Samantha has been with me, about five weeks now. I am not able to keep Samantha and think she would be much better off in another home with someone that has more time for her. If anyone knows someone looking for a sweet little female Yorkie, please put them in touch with me. I will have her spayed and then she will be ready to go to a new home. There will be lots of tears, even me, but I do believe it will be the best thing for all concerned. Jeanette |

| Is three anyway the dog could live at the child's mother's home? In the picture, it looks like the 14 yr old really loves this dog. I thinkI would try very hard to keep this dog in the family somehow, for the sake of this child. She is old enough to help care for the dog and lloks very attatched to the dog. After having her for 4 yrs , that is a longtime . I could not imangine letting go my dog , I have had her just over 3 yrs now. Would this break your grand daughters heart? A rescue is the best choice though. They are very careful where the dog will go to , and screen them well. I just think it is sad to have to give up this dog after having her for so long. I know I could not do that.

| Oh this is so sad and Samanthat is a real cutie. I am looking for a Yorkie also. I have one little girl a year and a half old but really am looking for a nuetered male of about a year to a year and a half old. My turn will come. I feel so bad for Samantha and for her little girl owner 14 years old is such a hard age especially combined with a divorce between her parents a new home a new step parent. It's just to bad that the mother isn't willing to take her as it just would be better for the girl and little Samantha. Just my thoughts. Hope someone is able to take her and love her. |

| Oh sad =( Im sure its going to be hard for everyone involved! However pets can cause serious health issues. I had 2 cats, and my DR told me I had to get rid of them because of asthma, after administering an allergy test. I was severely allergic. I had bronchitis 8 TIMES and pneumonia 3, all allergy and pet related and asthma just makes it worse.. It was very sad, but my kitties went to family of mine. And as hard as it is, when health issues hospitalize a person something has to be done. I hope you can find a good home for her, or a good rescue! |
