Advice on haircuts please! Hello! Rascal just had his first birthday on the 24th!! Hair is really getting long except i do cut across front like short bangs..it was hanging down so bad but not long enough to pull back and i couldnt take it any longer..His belly hair was cut once about a inch down from body but is getting long again. I wanted to wait till it was to the floor because in think that looks so cute!! but the more i see these short messy lookin hair cuts i would LOVE to try one but scared to do it. I like that messy teddy bear look but dont know if it will fit his body right or his hair will lay right... Rascal weighs 8pds.. stands about 9 in. and is 13 in. from neck to tail...I dont want the hair cut to make him look long and skinny but his hair is not course. it is soft shinny and really straight... i just dont know if he could pull it off...if it would have that fluffy look to it... Any advice or pictures to help me out please? Rascal says thanks too! It is 90 degrees here and i now he is hot..and the black hair dont help any...THANKS!!! (I have pic. posted if u would like to look and let me know what you think)

I do my own dogs hair and my advise would just say try out different styles! You never know what will work and what won't until you see the results! Remember you can always cut more off, but you cant put back on what youve cut off!

I am sure Rascal will look very studly with a short do. Take a look at Brandy's pictures as she has always had her hair kept about one to two inches long at the most. I would say start there, have him just trimmed to an inch, any shorter would probably be a shock to you.

Brandy's hair is very soft, not corse. It has never been over 2 inches long as we live in a place with very warm weather. If you are really concerned, just cut a little at a time. I actually think I do a better job than the groomers. I keep paying them and then have to even things out when she gets home. I can only assume that my little Brandy girl won't stand still for them and is much more comfortable with me with a pair of scissors and trimmers in my hand than a stranger.

that is the same way Rascal is...he even lets me put cut right by his eyes and dont move...he has senn groomer one time and fought like crazy. I trim his eyes, under tail, feet, and ears. So do you use shears on her body than? just the inch size one? I dont know what to do about the hair that hangs long down the sides of face,,down from ears.. and beard. Im afraid i will mess it up??

You might start by trimming a little off and see if you like it,if yes then go for a little more. The body is easier to do with electric shears and a deep comb. I use a #8 but that leaves the hair about an 1 1/4 long. The feet, belly, face and legs I use haircutting scissors, still learning to use the shears. Both of my poodles are scissor trimmed only, they dont like the noise but Mina is such a good girl she doesn't mind. You can find the scissors and shears at a beautiy supply,I have found a wider range of choises at Sally's. There are some GREAT tutorials in the library here, even a Youtube to watch,be sure to check that out. Good luck!

Each time I use the shears I show them to Mina, let her sniff, let her see me put it up against me,turn it on and put the back of it against my face. If Im willing to let it touch me,she is willing to let it touch her. Sounds a bit weird but it works. She gets to smell the brush, comb and nail clippers as well. I always talk softly and move slowly. Im letting her side facial hair grow some and he topknot. I trim her beard a little at a time until I get it like I want it. Ive been known to use the scissors to shape her feet and inbetween pads while watching tv at night so Im not trying to groom everywere all at once.

| Hi back, Rascal is such a little darling. I looked at your pictures and his coat looks full but silky and looks to lay flat. I think he could pull off just about any cut that you like. Zhoie is a soft coat and here's how I have her cut.

Good Luck, you can do it, just relax and enjoy your bonding time with your baby. Zhoie is open to my thought...if I screw her up....it's on hair it will grow back, .

| I just had Olivia cut for the first time. I gave my groomer specific instructions on how I wanted her hair cut (basically how Zhoie looks in the pictures above). Before I left Olivia,I told the groomer 3 times do not cut the hair on the top of her head because I want it long enough to continue putting it in a topknot. When I picked her up I almost cried because my little girl was bald! The hair on her head was also gone and she only has very short bangs. I hate her new cut and can not wait for her hair to grow back. At lest all of her fine baby hair is gone.

These are some things that I do to get one of my dogs used to being touched so they wont want to jerk away when being groomed. I massage their feet, while laying them on their back. Rub ontop of the feet, inbetween the toes and pads, touch the nails. To start I do this only as long as the dog will tolerate, eah time is a little longer. I then get them used to me running my fingers up and down their tummy, back and legs. I try to imitate the shears running up their body. All the time talking to them calmly and quietly. To learn how to clip the nails, for the both of us. I begin massaging the feet, let the dog smell the clippers and just take the tip off of the nails. Make sure you have "quickstop" next to you. If I cut the nail to close I put a little quickstop powder on a qtip and then apply it to the nail and let it stay until the bleeding stops. You can add more but dont leave it there for the dog to lick off. There may be some other steptic out there but I have only used "quickstop". I have even been massaging Minas gums and running my finger over her teeth. She thinks that I am playing at first but then relaxes and just lets me. There may be some people on the forum that show dogs and have a better method for a dog getting used to being touched,I would love to hear from them. Always open to a new technique.
