| Why wont my baby girl drink water Hello I am a newbie to owning a yorkie but I have had small baby's before so I know a little but on this little one I am stumped ... Now don't hollor at me as I really really really didn't know she was just a 5 week old puppy but she is.... breeder I got her from said she was 6weeks anyway she went to the vet this morning and the reason she is with me is because her momma stoped feeding her puppies they all have there teeth and where eating really good at least that is what I was told ... so I talked with a friend last night who suggested I give her goats milk mixed with water in her food and plain and all was looking good until I came home from the vet about 3 pm I was getting concerned because she hadn't eaten anything since 5 am that morning so I went out and got her some can food which she ate and was smaking her lips but she still hasn't drank any water I have put my finger in the bowl and I have gave her three dropers full of water but the vet said not to worry becasue she was getting water from the milk and from her food but I'm still worried ... has any of you ever delt with this before and what can I do to help her .. she isn't sick she plays just like nothing is wrong but it just can't be to healthy with her not drinking water ... Or am I wrong will she start to drink on her own should I keep giving her dropers of water if so how often or should I find another vet ... Sherrie |

| The only dog I have ever had that was that young was a little schnauzer. She literly had to learn to lap she was so tiny. When we got Kayla (yorkie) we put a little water bottle in the kennel. I didn't let her out without supervision because of our other dogs. She loved it and then when she was out running around she would go to the water bowl with the other ones and she just learned on her own to drink. But, the water bottle really came in handy. You might try it with this little one. |

| I heard water bottles are easier for tiny/young babies to get the hang of. I guess it is most like momma? It's the same premise as hamster water bottles but for pups. Good luck, as long as she is getting some liquid I wouldn't get too upset. Try the bottle and see if you can't eventually transition her to a bowl.

| I agree with trying a water bottle. Just make sure she has liquid in her system. Also, if you have dry food for her you can wet it with water to help her eat it when you start her on it. It'll probably make it a tad softer for her and easier for her to eat.

| Why don't you get this thread moved into the Breeder Talk so some of the experts might be more likely to see it and respond. I think that might get you more experts but am not really sure of the correct forum. You could ask Admin to move it to whatever she thinks might be more helpful. I would worry the baby will get dehydrated but since still on milk, maybe not. That is why you need an expert. Good luck!

| I have the same trouble with my baby since the place we got our little guy from told us that he was 6 weeks and he was only 4 1\2 weeks old. He eats dog food which I wet down a whole lot. This helps him get more water since he regularly pees the vets has reassured me that he's not dehydrated. When I first got him he was a little dehydrated and the vets gave him little shots of water under his skin to help him. I also alternated bottle feedings at first with the puppy food. The main concern my vet had for my little guy was hypoglycimia. He told me to put a tiny drop of the clear kayro syrup on his gums twice a day to make sure he was ok. |

| Canned dog foods usually contain over 70% of moisture, compared to less than 10% for dry. So she is getting some liquid from the canned food. I'd continue to have water accessible to her and check that her gums are pink & moist.

| Thank you thank you thank you so much she is pee peeing regularly and the vet did say not to worrie lol and the breeder did contact me about an hour ago said that was indeed the reason she let them go so early momma wasn't letting them feed off her any longer so she let them go home I told her it would have been nice to know that to begin with lol. but I'm glad that is what happened and she just wasn't a bad breeder ... she suggested that I give the at least an ounce of goat milk and water mix twice a day and feed her the can food with her kibble mixed with a tiny bit of the milk and more of the water that way she is indeed getting a healthy mix ... also in two to three weeks wean her off as she should be drinking water by then lol.... sounds so simple ... I hope it is true lol... Sherrie |

| Just keep her hydrated even if it's by dropper and in the end she'll drink on her own accord, love to see a picture.

| I wanted to mention if you do decide to get a water bottle, you will probably have to get one for a hamster. We went everywhere and even Petsmart and Petco we still ended up getting one that was for a hamster. Doesn't make any difference they still work great. Attaching it to the kennel, Kayla would even drink all night. Good luck with this little bitty baby. |

| A water bottle is the best thing to do. I would also add water to her canned food even though it already has moisture this will still help her get more fluid. You mayhave to teach this new baby how to use a water bottle, make sure she knows , and is drinking out of the bottle too.
