when bathing dogs with dry itchy skin, keep the water a bit cooler, not cold, but cooler than lukewarm. and use a lot of water, hydrate the skin well. a good pet shampoo, oatmeal or hypo allergenic, followed by a remoisturezing conditioner. between baths, spritz with emu oil. and as others have said, a good quality food is very important.

The food you are using contains soy, the most common food allergen. Find a food with balanced Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids and one that has no soy. The ratio in Nutro Natural Choice Small Breed Puppy is 17.5 to 1. A good food will have a ratio of between 2 and 5 to 1. These two groups of fatty acids work in conjunction with each other and need to be balanced. 17.5 to 1 is not balanced. Omega 3 fatty acids are what gives your dog a healthy skin and coat and the better foods are balanced. Good choices are Blue Buffalo Small Breed Puppy and Wellness Super 5 mix Just for Puppy.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Is this a puppy or an adult? Does the skin have any reddish/splotchy areas on the back, neck, tummy, groin or anywhere? Skin issues are always secondary to something else...whether allergies, or some disease state etcetera. If the itching seems excessive...I'd def recommend going to the vet or vet derm and having the skin thoroughly inspected. In allergy dogs, skin infections are not uncommon, and need a prescription. There are also prescription shampoos that have great ingreds for skin problems.

look for an oatmeal shampoo with collidial(sp) oatmeal. unfortunately, pet product manufacturers dont have to list ingredients, so you may have to visit websites and even email some companies. I will ask at another site what is recommended.

Mocha had same problem before. He did so well on Orijen that I didn't change his food. Instead I just added Orijen fish formula and feed 50/50%. Also bath him every 7 days instead of 5 days. Problem went away and never came back. PS: he also uses Pet Silk shampoo and conditioner (rainforest scent). I tried many different ones and Pet Silk's scent lasted the longest, keeping my baby smelling great for days.

So I bought him some new food today. The Wellness super5 mix just for puppies. I am going to start slowly switching him over a little each day. I also bought some more shampoo for him, the crazydog baby dog shampoo and some spray that come with it for conditioning. To answer the questions above: He is a puppy 4 months old. He doesnt have any spots or red marks on him anywhere. He is not itching all the time just a few times aday I catch him. His skin is a little white colored from the dryness but not noticable unless you are looking for it. I hope the food switch and the new bath soap will help him Thanks for all the info and suggestions.
