| My new yorkie puppy Hello to all the Yorkies and their parents, Hi my name is Chantay. I live in Dayton, OH. I have been wanting a yorkie for quite some time now. I finally got one less than a week ago and boy did I get my hands full.I have an adorable girl named Lexi. She is sooooo cute but I just don't know what to do with her. This is my first pet EVER! When I got her from the breeder, she claimed that she was on hard food but when I got her home she would not eat at all. I've learned that normal behavior but when I took her to visit the vet they suggested soft food. Well when I went out to buy food I choose a different brand from both breeder and vet. Well today I was told about a brand that suppose to be great for yorkie's. I went and bought that brand and she wouldn't eat but licked the gravy then threw it all up. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME Thanks, Lexi Mom |

| Congratulations on your baby! Sorry you are having trouble with her. How old is she? What are you feeding her?

| Congrats on your new addition. It is really common for puppies not to eat after changing homes. Both of my puppies did the same. If you are a new pet owner, it is important to keep reading up and sharing info. Coming here is a great idea. You can finger feed her some high calorie food such as NutriCal to keep her blood sugar up. In a pinch, you can use Karo syrup. I also spoiled my dogs and fed them liver treats...just to get them to eat SOMETHING. They are fine now and eat what I give them. good luck. |

| You have to be careful with food switches they can cause upset stomachs I understand your dilema though youve got to find something she will eat. When jEWEls was tiny I feed her gerber toddler meat sticks

My pup didn't want to eat much either when he got home, partly due to being so excited and in a new surrounding. Leave her food out where she can get to it, when she is hungry she will eat Make sure to keep giving her the food the breeder gave you, that may be why she's getting sick off new food. You can slowly incorporate new food in with the food her breeder gave you so her little tummy can get used to it. Have patience, she'll come around! Congratulations on your new addition and welcome to YT!!

| first of all you must have NutriCal ready for her until she turns 6months.4 (vet recommended). You can try high quality food brand such as Wellness. This brand have a wet food called (wellness just for puppy). I hope she will like it. Im feeding my yorkie wellness brand seens to be healthy and high rate on this brand. |

| Hi and welcome! You will learn quite a lot on this forum. I have been raising yorkies for over 25 years now and I have learned more here in the short amount of time that I was on. First things - do not suddenly change your puppies food. Their digestive system is very delicate and she will definitely throw up. You have to make any changes - gradually. The first day mix it in with the puppies usual food - 75percent old to 25percent new. The second day 50-50, the third 25-75 and the fourth only the new. As for the dry. I give my guys only dry. They have never had anything other than kibble - but others on here will tell you otherwise. What I did when I first got my puppy home was put in a very shallow bowl the dry kibble, wet it just a little to moisten it, squirt some honey in it and then microwave it to get it all mushy. I would even add in some chicken baby food to entice the little one. Slowly, slowly, I would add in more dry than moist. But keep in mind, the change alone will get your little one not to eat. Make sure you give her a little bit of Nutrical every day in order to avoid any issues with hypoglycemia. Good luck to you.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Welcome to you and Lexi. It's awfully hard on a puppy to change its food suddenly. If you don't want to feed what the vet recommends, you might try softening the breeder's dry food with water. You might also try a very bland diet for a couple of days, then phase in the soft food. Poach a chicken breast in water only until it shreds easily. Take the chicken out and shred it -- put it in the fridge for a little later. Let the broth cool in the fridge, and skim the fat off the top -- too much fat could cause digestive problems. Then cook a little rice in some of the chicken broth (I use 1 part rice to 3 parts broth) until it's really soft. For the first feeding, just give the rice. At each additional meal, add a very small amount of chicken until you're feeding about half rice, half chicken. Then you can start to phase prepared dog food back in by adding a little more of it to each meal. But really, you should talk with your vet first -- based on his examination of the puppy and his knowledge of her age and condition, (if he is a GOOD vet) he will be most qualified to partner with you to help your dog live a long and health life. I've taken info found here to my vet and he has always been willing to sit down with me and explain why he recommends for or against an idea. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | Hi and welcome! I am a new mom too and my baby is also named Lexi. Funny enough my Lexi was very picky when i got her from the seller as well. The seller gave me a bag of the dry food she had the puppies on after she weaned them and I just continued feeding Lexi the same thing. But she stopped eating it... so i switched to Wellness (which gave her loose stool) and she ate it for a few days and after that refused to eat that too. So I bought another food and she just turned her nose up at it. I read alot of bad reviews on dog food before i got Lexi and initially decided I would cook for her. So after many failed attempts of feeding her the dog food, i bought ground turkey, and brown rice, diced up carrots, broccoli, fresh basil and potatoes very small and cooked everything together in a little olive oil. Lexi was very hungry at this point and she ate it all up. She has been on this diet now for almost a month and will not eat anything else. I work during the day so what I do is make enough to last a week and every Sunday I re-cook. Her stool is healthy and has virtually no smell, she is very happy with this diet. She gets excited to eat. It can be a sacrifice to take this route but in the long run it is worth it. One of the many benefits is that you know what isin the food you prepare and you know your dog wont suffer from skin problems and other issues as reported with some dog food diets. I also have nutrical for her (which she loves). Usually what I do is give her a teaspoon of the nutrical after i feed her in the morning and this keeps her sugar levels good until I come home to feed her for lunch. Good luck!
