| Confession... Advice on housebreaking? Okay, I have a confession. My dog has reverted back to going potty in the house, and I've been busting my tail to clean up behind her before the DH sees the evidence. Well, he was off a few days, and caught Khloe, so needless to say, it's about time to get her house trained. Has anyone had good luck without crate training? I don't have the heart to put her back in a crate. But she must be 90% housebroken soon, in like 2 months. The DH expressed his concerns that she is almost a year old, and this is uncalled for.

| I wish I could help you but I too am going through the same thing with Bella who is 8 months. I started a thread yesterday on this forum as well as the training forum and I didn't get any replies. Hope you have better luck than I did. Yesterday she even peed twice on my sofa. She was playing with my husband and he had stopped playing with her then I looked and she had peed. I think he had scolded her, so I am wondering if it is defiance or marking her territory. The same thing the second time only this time I scolded her. Lately when she doesn't get her own way, she does this kick thing, pushing out her back feet like a bull. Also she will attach her self to my husband's arm and hump it. I don't know what is going on with her, but I hope she gets over it soon. Good Luck with your little one. If I find something that works for me I will post. |

| Snowbird - is Bella starting her first heat cycle? Sometimes that will make them act funny. Especially the humping thing. Our beagles will do this when one of the females starts her heat cycle. Might be the same reason for the potty thing too. Just something to think about. |

YT 2000 Club Member | I crate trained both of mine and also use a doggie door. I know it is difficult at times using a crate but it worked for us and it sure is a lot better now that she is housetrained.

| How do you want to train her? outside? potty pads? I'm not sure on the potty pad training maybe someone will chime in and help with that...but if outside training is what you want I can help...I have a 2 1/2 yr old and a 5 1/2 month old pup....my 2 yr old is fully house trained...my 5 mo old is coming along very nicely...he is already sleeping with DH and I with no accidents at all but he is still not fully house trained to have full run of the house...I don't trust him enough for that yet but he is getting there First what you need to do it confine her, don't let her have full run of the house anymore...you are starting from the beginning again with potty training...You don't have to use a crate I hate crates...I only use them for travel...buy a x pen or play yard...I like the play yards I have 2 LOL...second I would get a good odor cleaner like Natures Miracle...you can get in pet smart, clean all the areas that she has pottied in with water and vinger let it dry and spray the natures miracle on it to remover the odor...you may not be able to smell it anymore after cleaning but she can and will use that spot again if you don't use the natures miracle. Like I said above you are going to have to start from the beginning with her and thats means keeping her confined when you can not watch her at all time...I would start off taking her out every 2 hours and after eating/drinking and any kind of play...when taking her out look at her and say gotta potty and go outside...keep saying go potty for pee until she does...when she does throw a potty party give her, her favorite treat and tell her what a good girl she is and if its time for her to poop as well tell her to hurry up....I do "go potty for pee" and "hurry up for poop"..I know she won't do both everytime but you should have an ideal of when its time for a poop...if she potties outside when you go back in let her stay out of the play yard for a bit with you having an eagles eye on her at all times...again don't let her have full run of the house...if you can't watch her put her in her confined area...if you catch her in the act correct her with a firm no, that should get her attention enough to make her stop peeing and take her right outside don't wait and say good girl, letting her know its ok to potty outside..you have to be very consistent with them...set her up for success don't give her a chance to fail...and success starts with you and please know its going to take longer than a few months to train her, it might take 6 mos or even a year to get her fully house trained so please keep that in mind and be patient...if you are consistent with the training she will get it Here is the play yard that I have for my 5 month old pup..you have to order it online they are not in any stores that I know of I got mine off of Ebay xpens/play yards for pets/dogs....they are big enough for food/water/bed/toys. I would NOT put any potty pads down in her confined area at all that will just confuss her by saying its ok to potty in the house...she is a year old, she should be able to hold it atleast 5 to 6 hours now I love the plays cause they have a floor in them just in case they do have accidents and a mesh top that can be zipped up if you have a climber good luck...hope this helps

| Do you have a doggie door? We do, and I think that is why housebreaking has been pretty easy for us. My pup is 6 months old and I can't remember the last time he had an accident in the house. I know doggie doors aren't for everyone, but I think housebreaking is so much easier if you have one. |

| I have Remy on a pretty tight schedule. I pretty much know when he was to poo and pee. I know he has to go as soon as he is finished eating and he eats at the same times each day. After he eats I take him out and he doesn't come back in till he is finished. First thing in the morning he goes, then the afternoon, after dinner, and right before bed time. I find keeping him on this schedule I don't have an surprises. I also keep a close eye on him and if need be I can confine him to one area of the house. Treats are also important!! I give Remy a cherrio when he goes out and potty.

| I have the same problem with Zach who is 10 months old. Zoe took almost a year to get housebroken. yorkies are sometimes very hard to housebreak. I wont use a crate for housebreaking. I think an x pen is much better. You really have to confine them and not give them the run of the house I put the pee pad right outside of the pen and when he goes on the pad he gets a treat and when he goes on the floor he gets a time out in his pen. It's starting to work now. Oliver our 11 week old shih tzu is 99 % housebroken. I found that puppies are like kids. They get busy and forget to use the potty especially when they're playing. Don't get discouraged. I thought I was going to flip out with Zoe but now she's perfect at 15 months old. |

| I forgot to to tell you...if she doesn't potty when you take her out...put her in her confined area wait 15 to 30 minutes and try again until she does. don't just assume she doesn't have to go if she doesn't and let her have run of the house or even let her stay out with you watching her, cause as sure as I'm sitting her....the minute you go back in if you don't put her up in her confined area...she will go and potty somewhere in the house.

| I would love a doggie door. But our fence has too wide of gaps in between, and she has been known to pay the neighbors visits. It scares me to death. We have bad traffic out front and I know our two neighbors on each side of us, but that is about it.

I would use a good pet odor remover shampoo and use the natures miracle after the carpet is dry on all her potty spots...I would take something to mark the spots so after you shampoo you still know where she pottied at and you can spray the natures miracle on them and you might have to get those spots soaking with the natures miracle to get thru to the pads under the carpet as well....and no, the surgery should not revert her as long as you are consistent with her potty training. and now that I'm thinking about it when you go for the natures miracle in pet smart...I think they have a natures miracle shampoo as well....best odor remover EVER!!
