My breeder suggested that I do not microchip my puppy. She said that a couple of her smaller dogs are chipped and that the chips seem to bother them a lot. I had been planning on getting my puppy chipped, but now I am wondering...

So to those of you who have smaller dogs - do the chips really seem to bother them or not?

All of my Yorkies are microchipped and other than a slight discomfort when they were inserted (no worse than a vaccination) none have ever had any issue with the chip. I've never seen them scratch, bite, or even notice the chip was in place. What did your breeder say was the issue with her dogs?

All of mine are Micro-chipped and none of them have had problems with it at all.

The smallest yorkie I have had was 3 1/2 pounds and it didn't bother him at all.

My breeder said that on her smaller dogs that the chips would travel and that they would have periodic swelling in that area and seemed tender to the touch. She said she would do it on larger dogs just not small ones.

I strongly suggest microchips it just might be the only thing that brings your baby back to you if he/she lost

Both my girls were microchipped while they were spayed so they didn't experience the discomfort of having it done. They have had their's for almost a year and we have had no problems.

IMO, it provides an extra bit of promise to having my girls returned to me in the event they are ever missing.

My puppy, 12 weeks old, is already micro chipped. He does have a small lump where the chip was placed, but I have been able to touch him there (back of neck) and he has had no issues. From what I was told they have a good chance of finding your Yorkie if it is chipped if you register their chip. Good luck!!

My little man is chipped. The day he got it, it did bother him after the anesthesia wore off. I had the chip put in at the same time as his neuter. I'm glad I did it this way; I'm sure it would have been more uncomfortable without he anesthesia. His back was bloody where the vet inserted the needle. I don't know why it was so bloody. It could have been normal, or the vet did a poor job of inserting it. Fast forward to today, over a year later, the chip doesn't bother my pup at all. He doesn't even know it's there.

Both of mine are microchipped and have had no issues... They both got theirs done while they were under for their spay/neuter. I want to know that I am doing everything I can to ensure they get back to me.

I had mine microchipped and it seemed to bother the techs doing it more than it bothered my 2. They were around 5lbs at the time of chipping.
They are now 7 and 6.5 and still no issues.

I did have a larger rescue that was with me for a short time. I took her to the vet shortly after I got her because I felt something on her side. It turned out to be her chip. The vet said that they can travel no matter how big or small the dog is. Because they are smaller, most people run their hands over their whole body and would feel it if it moved.

I would microchip the puppy though. A tattoo will fade or become distorted and a collar can be removed.

All of mine are chipped! Never ANY discomfort noted. My Maya is 3lbs. and Remy is 4 lbs!! Both on the small side. Highly recommend it.

I have all my dogs microchipped. Remy is 4lbs and was chiped about 1 month ago. We have not had any problems.

I have found dogs in the past, the first thing I would do is take them to my vet to see if they are chipped... it has help many pups return to their home.

I have both of mine Chipped, with no health problems.

But, one needs to be aware...
There are about six Manufacturers of those Electronic ID Chips.
They operate/are activated by different Radio Frequencies (scanner).
Some Scanners will "read" more than one of the above Frequencies.
But, I'm unaware of any Scanner, that will read all the Frequencies used.

SO...
1) You should be aware of who Manufactured the Chip
(not Banfield for instance, but the actual Manufacturer)
2) Exactly what Frequency in KHz/MHz the Chip is activated with.
3) The Digital Number transmitted to the Scanner (individual to each Chip).

Needless to say, you should have the above information recorded for
each of your animals, in case of Lost/Stolen or other need to provide
proof of ownership.

Blue was microchipped when he was a puppy. He is fine with it. My other dogs and cat are also microchipped and have no problem.

Ask a vet...then do it!

A lot of people use Home Again chips...depends mostly on who your vets does.

You can also go to many rescues and they have their vets do it to raise their own funds (they usually charge significantly less than any regular vet) and they also give a discount in the service because they want to ensure a lost dog makes it home...not unclaimed and then maybe save by a rescue...I believe almost all humane society shelters offer this service...but many other independant rescues do also.
