| New Yorkie Owner!! Need advice!! Hello all!! My fiance and I just got our baby today. (Bentley) He has been wandering the house and checking things out, but is very whiney and seems to be upset and full of anxiety. How can we make this feel like home for the little guy? We have tried toys, letting him wander, cuddling, petting, leaving him be for awhile, and nothing is working! Also, anyone have any good tips for potty training inside? We bought a potty patch (fake grass) for inside for him to go on. He has had one accident and I just picked him up and took him over to the potty patch. We would love any ideas since we are first timers and want to do everything the right way! Thanks!! |

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | Hi and welcome to YT, congratulations on your new baby! The anxiety is normal on there first couple of days in their new home, it's just because it is a new enviroment with different smells that he is not familiar with. He will begin to calm down after a few days once he gets used to his new home so dont worry about that. You may find he will cry in the night a few times for a while, this could be down to needing to go potty or simply because he is missing his mom and litter mates. If he cries in the night and dosnt need to go potty simply move his crate or whatever he is sleeping in near you so he can smell and sense you are there. When Poppy was really small I found she slept better with a hot water bottle under her bedding and a ticking clock near her bed (heartbeat). For potty training inside just keep an eye on him, watch for the signs of needing to go potty (sniffing the floor, circling) and take him straight to the potty patch. Give him a command such as "go potty" or "go pee pee" and praise him lots when he goes in the correct place. If you catch him in the act going potty on the carpet just give a firm no and take him straight to the potty patch and give him the command, then praise him lots when he goes in the correct place. If you dont catch him in the act but find a puddle/poop on the carpet dont make a fuss just clean it up and try to keep a closer eye on him. Good luck and cant wait to see pictures of your little one!

| You might want to limit his space. It can be comforting to Bentley to have his own space. It can also help with the potty training issue. Limiting his space can also limit the areas he can have accidents in. Once he gets the hang of where you want him to potty, you can grant him access to more space. It might sound slow going, but it will pay off.

| Hi, welcome to YT. Guess what? 1 month ago, I posted the same set of question in this forum as I face the same problem with Tezel. First night I barely get any sleep coz he was whinning and crying. 1 good suggestion that I got from here is, to put his crate beside your bed or anywhere in your room. As long as he can see you, he will stop his whining. Trust me, it works. They will only whine when they need to go, else they will be quite settle down. Give him a soft warm blanket and talk to him gently before you go to bed. Good luck and do keep us posted on his progress... |

| Hi and welcome to YT. We also have a little one names Bentley. I just love that name. I am also having trouble uploading pics on here. I am not very computer savy. Hahaha. I got alot of great advice for Bentley. My little guy is only 12 weeks old and weighs 1 pound 11 oz. I have him going on a potty pad inside the house because it is so cold here in Missouri. The weather here can't make up it's mind. The vet said for right now it's the best way. It's a hit and miss kind of thing, but we are doing pretty well. As far as the sleeping.. he wakes me up 2 times during the night to potty then goes right back in his porta crib. He did cry the first few nights I had him. Good luck to you. The advice on here is great. |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | In order to give him some idea of where to go potty (on the pad) next time he goes poo just take it and place it on the pad... Take him to it, let him sniff around, and than leave it there until he successfully uses the pad. Be sure that when he uses the pads give him plenty of praise and "atta boys" You may need do change the poo a few times before he gets the hang of things so it don't start to smell bad. Sounds kind of GROSE but it works.... this is how I trained all of my dogs and the puppies that I sell.

| Hi and welcome to YT. Yes the first few days my puppies were anxious and cried alot but then they got used to being with us. We tried using the potty patch but we didn't like the smell of it after awhile so we just use a regular pee pad. The best thing to do is not give the puppy alot of room to roam. Keep him confined in an x pen with a ped inside. We made the mistake of giving our puppy the whole house and it was very hard to train him. As soon as we confined him to a smaller area he got the hang of it. |

| Thanks to all who gave advice! We have had lots of accidents, but a few successes with the potty pad, however last night at bedtime was a BIG challenge!! Looking for advice from anyone who keeps their yorkie in a crate at night in the room you sleep in. We are waiting for his X-pen to arrive, and will let him sleep in a bed inside of his pen once we get it, but for the time being we have him in his crate and he HATES IT! He whines and barks and scratches at the sides. We have tried ignoring it, saying "NO" sternly, and even gotten a spray bottle and sprayed his face with a little water if he barks. It kills both of us to leave him in there like that, but we know if we just let him out he will continue it. My fiance ended up sleeping next to his kennel on the floor because it was the only way Bentley would calm down. He slept from 10-2:20, woke up to go potty, but was up again at 4:30 ready to go for the day. Is this typical? How long should they sleep and any advice as to how to get him to enjoy his crate and not bark and whine? We live in an apartment so its hard for us to just ignore it all night and make our neighbors listen to it too!! We love this little guy and want to make him as comfortable and adjusted as we can!! Thanks!! |

| I think you are doing a great job there! When I got my Kinsey I slept with the TV on because when I turned it off she would start to cry. She liked the noise. Also when I got up to potty in the night, I got Kinsey up to potty also on her pad. It all takes time and Rome wasn't built in a day. Hand in there. It will get better. |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk. Be sure to clean the pee and poo spots with an enzyme cleaner such as Nature's Miracle. Two of my youngest are pee pad trained. I use washable ones. Love them. ~Joanne~

YT 3000 Club Member | you just have to be patient with him, you have taken him away from his familair enviroment and his other litter mates, chester and I cuddled and took alot of naps together and I would have something near him that smelled like me after he was in his new home, like a t shirt or something, please dont spray him in the face that will scare him more. They love to be with their humans and you will notice more and more when you have hima few days, yorkies are very social little things, which is one thing I love about them. They will go potty after a nap and playing, and make sure you feed him frequently and have nutrical on hand for hypoglycemia. |
