Hi,
My yorkie can be so good about going to the bathroom outside at times and then out right awful other times.

We make frequent trips outside, and she will often "go potty" outside on command. And at night, we keep her in a crate, and she will wake me up by scratching on the crate to let me know she has to go. Then will go immediately outside. When she is in her play pen, we keep a pad in there and she always goes pee on the pad in the play pen, never misses. We only keep her in the play pen when we can't supervise her or when we go out.

Today, she went over to the back door and pushed on it trying to get out, then when I let her out she went pee and poo shortly after.

But, later tonight, we played outside for 15 minutes or so, and then when she came back inside she pooped on the floor 5 minutes later. Then about 1 hour and a half later, she pooped again on the carpet, with no attempt to go outside.

Then when she clearly didn't really have to pee, she did this little tinkle on the carpet, so tiny I could barely call it a pee. But, she did it deliberately while I was seated in my office chair right next to her. I wasn't sure she was really going, so I didn't interrupt. What is the point of this little accident?

What gives? Any help would be appreciated. One thing to note, is that when we take her outside, she almost always goes on the pee pads that are laid out on our patio, but she rarely poos on them.

How old is your little girl? It sounds like she "marked" your carpet, just barely a dribble on the floor, both males and females do this. With the poo, how often are you feeding her? If she is pooping within 2 hours of going it sounds like she just has too much kibble in her diet. Obviously, you should speak with your vet before making any diet changes, but if you are free-feeding I'd recommend putting her on a schedule. I feed Rizzo 1/4 in the AM and 1/2 at night and he goes 2x a day, 3 if we're having an active day.

Oh, and he doesn't poo on the pads either, but he's a squat-walker

I feed her about 3 times a day. I could be better about her schedule. She usually poops 3 times a day, once in the morning, and a lot at night around 8 - 10 pm.

She is 12 weeks old. How long does it usually take to housebreak?

Yes, I would have to say, I must be feeding her too much. She just pooped 3 times this morning within the same hour. She actually went outside when I first took her out with me, and then once by herself while I wasn't looking. Then the final time, she did it on the carpet inside.

Well, considering her age she is actually doing really well. At 12 weeks I wouldn't make any major changes in feeding, she is too young to cut back on food, the little ones need plenty to eat all the time. How much are you feeding, that could be the problem not the 3x a day. Check the bag and try to feed the amount listed, or you can check with your vet to see if they recommend something else. But at 12 weeks you cant expect much, they have itty bitty bladders, and their metabolism is probably pretty speedy. Again, you are definitely on the right track and it sounds like once she gets older and can hold it longer she'll be totally (or 99%) house trained.

How long? How long you got? I know of one female that is almost 14, that is still not 100% housebroken!

I'm guessing there are products or home made remedys for killing the scent of dog pee and poo. Buddy has only made one mistake (that we know of). We walk him 3 times a day and he does all his biz. He sleeps with us and so far (knock on this pressboard desk), he doesn't stir much until we get up in the morning.

I really think the walks make the difference.

She's the perfect age to give her a way to tell you she needs to go outside by hanging doorbells she can ring or a floor bell she can push. I think she's doing very well for her age and perhaps she just needs a way to tell you when she needs to go. In time, she will do fine.
