| chicken broth for yorkie? Hello all....I purchased my Yorkie two weeks ago. His name is Kobe. He is 12 weeks today! Well he had been having a small case of diarrhea since Friday. Today he was doing much better until I seen a clear fluid in his stool. I took him to the vet and they recommended me feed him rice and chicken. Is it fine to feed him chicken broth and rice? And if so, I have some swanson chicken broth with no MSG that I bought from the store. Is that fine to mix with the rice? Thanks |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk and congratulations on your new pup. What did the vet say is the cause of the diarrhea? I would feed plain boiled chicken breast and rice. The amount of sodium in the canned chicken broth would concern me, especially for a pup. What was Kobe eating before and is his appetite good? How much does he weigh? I would have white Karo syrup or Nutrical on hand in case of a hypoglycemic episode. Keep a close eye on his gums to make sure they stay moist and pink, not sticky or pale. You could also give Kobe a half a teaspoon of plain yogurt, no sugar or other additives. Sometimes this helps with digestion.

| I've had to do this with Soph a couple of times and what I did is boil the chicken first, just chicken and water. Then while the chicken is cooling, I use the water (now broth) i cooked it in to make the rice. that gives the rice some flavor, doesn't waste anything, and I know that there isn't anything in the broth that's bad for her. plus she loves it. I'll also save a little of the broth back to mix in with the chicken and rice over the next couple of days. I make up enough for two or three days, and by the second day it's starting to get a little dry. add the extra broth and it's good as new. Last edited by My Sophia; 02-12-2011 at 09:16 PM. |

| Another reason to serve actual chicken and not just broth is that a pup needs the nutrients. Broth alone is insufficient. I hope your pup is doing better today. Please keep us updated.

| boiled boneless chicken breast and boiled white rice is what I would feed my lttle one if it was sick. It is important to make sure that your baby drinks too. I would buy some nurtrical. you can get that at pet smart or pet co, I hope your lttle one feels better soon.

| The vet said the diarrhea was possible coccidia. But she also said something about a parasite shedding and causing his poop to have mucous in it. She gave him some medicine to take once a day that's gonna help kill the parasite and firm up his poop. When I bought him two weeks ago the owner was feeding him Eukanuba. So I was gradually switching him to Wellness Just My Puppy. But since his stomach messed up I went and bought some more Eukanuba to gradually switch again. I thought that was the cause of his soft stool. Now he weighs 4.5lbs. So could I add some water in the chicken broth and use it with the chicken breast and rice? And is the precooked chicken breast ok to use or should I just get the raw chicken breast and cook that? |

| This morning he did ok. He has had one soft stool, like soft serve ice cream. He has been drinking his water fine and playing around just fine. |

| I would just do as the others suggest and boil the chicken breast in plain water, and use the water from that chicken for the broth. TONS of sodium in boxed broth, and very little in a boiled breast, just make sure not to add salt. I just got a new puppy two weeks ago today, and he had a bit of diarrhea too. Thats what I did, and within a day, he was better and eating well!!!!!! Good luck with your baby!!! Coccidia is pretty easy to treat when found early!!! Which you did, good job!!!!! Congrats mommy!!

| Thanks...I'm glad i did catch it. I was so worried it was something else. I will go ahead and boil the chicken and use that in the rice also and hopefully he will good and everything will be fine. Thanks for the advice =) |

I would stick with the Eukanuba until your pup is settled and completely well. Diet changes can be rough on a pup, especially when he is dealing with so many other changes. Best wishes.

| Well I ended giving him boiled chicken breast and rice and he loved it. The problem now is that he hasn't pooped since this morning. I'm waiting until he poop to see how his stomach is doing but he hasn't since about 10 something this morning. and it is now 8:00p.m. Should I be worried or is that common? |

When I have feed Taycie boiled chicken and rice when her stomach is upset the rice does seem to constipate her a little. She does poop less. This is why it is recommended to dogs with upset tummies because it helps with the diaherra. You could try a little plain canned pumpkin, not the pumpkin pie kind, a Tsp usually does the trick for Taycie!
