| Question on treats & potty training? Ok so we are going on week two of having Cody at home and I am amazed at how quick he took to the wee-wee pads….. He goes first thing in the morning and about three more times during the course of the day and then again before bed time. In the beginning I would reward him with a doggie treat after he did his business but he is so smart that as soon as he goes potty he heads straight to the kitchen for a treat. So my question is since these treats (small bone shaped) were purchased from the pet store they were in one of the big unmarked bins next to other treats, should I worry about giving him to much of something that I do not even know the ingredients for? (next time I go to the pet store I will try and find the name and company so I can do my own research as far as the ingredients) but even if they were healthy for him is this a good practice to continue, I mean is it healthy to always reward your puppy with treats since they have such small stomachs, I even started breaking them in half so I feed him less since I noticed he would not eat his regular meals as quick, or am I worrying about nothing????? |

| Since he is so young and still "training" I would continue to treat for pottying. I used natural treats that were more on the moist side although mine go ga-ga over Yorkie Yummies as well. You can get them from Chattiesmom, a fellow YT'er. They are the perfect size for treating. If I gave a Zukes (they are small to start with), I cut them into 4ths. Now as they are older, I still halve them when I treat alot. Mine get a treat everytime we come back from a walk still. I personally like to know what ingredients are in the foods that mine get. To this day mine don't like the biscuit type of treats. The teller gives them to us at the bank drive thru and they immediately bury it into their carseat. lol I find it there the next time we go out. lol I would say eventually you can cut the treats back but it doesn't hurt (in my opinion) to keep treating/rewarding for doing something they should. Just be careful of high fat treats as with humans...yorkies can get overweight quickly. Hope this helps.

| Oh, and they guys are pretty smart. Mine figure out that they could get double treats of they peed and came over for a treat and then run back and potty on the pad. Smart little boogers these guys are. lol

| We use a glass container of large size dog kibble as treats. The click of the container is important. I started using the kibble when my DH would go thru a box of "cookies" in a few days. |

| My little one is smart too! I have only had her for a week so she is still having accidents, but several times she has run into our computer room (where we are) with her pee pad in her mouth, look at us, go to the bathroom on it, and then come up to us for a treat. It's like she wants to make sure we see her using her pee pad! |
