| My new shorkie has a really bad underbite Her jaw protrudes. It does not seem to cause her any pain, but I don't think she had it with her milk teeth. Suddenly at about five months I could see her bottom teeth just shine and then I put her jaws together and Yousa! Her lower jaw is about 1/2 an inch longer than her upper. Has anyone ever dealt with this? What happened? Will she need a surgery? Callie, and Alice! |

I'm assuming she is part Shih tzu? I know they tend to have underbites, but I would have her examined.

| Yes you need to see a vet, no one can tell you over the internet and I would go very soon as she is still a puppy. Maybe they can do something for her as she is still growing. Good luck and keep us updated.

| Underbite issues I know that my post is very old; considering your original post was from August 2008; however I just found your question about your dogs underbite and I had similar concerns. I have two shorkies. One is 4 years old and she has an underbite, but it's not that bad. Then we got another shorkie who is 7 months old now and both were from the same breeder. (not bred by the same dog parents - important to note since underbites are a genetic issue). Both of my dogs did not have underbites when we got them (we got both at around 12 weeks of age). It soon became apparent in the early months that they would have underbites. They developed over time. I will say that my 4 year old's underbite is MUCH less evident that the 7 month old. The 7 month old (Gus) has a much more pronounced underbite than his sister, Chloe (the 4 year old). I am actually shocked at how much Gus' underbite has developed. Given this information, I was wondering if now (4 years since you posted your message), have you noticed that your dogs underbite has gotten even worse? Do you have other shorkies to compare underbites to? Did you seek vet assistance and/or did anything about the underbite? I was never concerned with Chloe's underbite because it was minor, but with Gus' being so much worse, I'm wondering if I should have a vet look at him closer. Thanks for your assistance! |
