Hello,
I got my yorkie, Millie, 3 weeks ago. She's 11 weeks old and I brought her to the vets last week for her final injection. But when the vet was giving her the injection Millie yelped.The vet said that she should not yelp and that she is probably too spoit. But is really unusual for a young puppy to yelp??

No...not spoiled...just loved a lot. Poor baby
I don't know about it not being normal to yelp during an injection, but I sure would yelp if I was a little puppy. Maybe someone with more experience will give you better info.

I am sorry to hear that your vet was so harsh. I would be concerned about a vet that responds as he or she did. You might want to check with other Yorkie owners about what vet they see. An 11 week old pup can be easily frightened so a yelp is not out of the question. Or maybe the Vet had poor technique when vaccinating your pup. Either way, give that little one some luv and enjoy these wonderful creatures! Liz

My Remy yelped each time I took her in for shots I was told to put a ice pack on it and as soon as I did she stopped yelping...

Thank you! I was worried as she is my first dog and I thought I might be doing something wrong! and I will certainly not be going back to the same vet again. She was very harsh and rude.

Lol All I know is that until my baby was about 5 months old, it was IMPOSSIBLE to brush her without her screaming bloody murder ( & she isn't my 1st furbutt either) so I think it's just their tolerance to pain or prior experience with things. My groomer said Kasha was bratty but I'm pretty sure when she was groomed before I got her she wasn't treated as well ... perhaps the same with your lil one except with the vet.

Also ... 11 weeks is really a BABY! She has time to toughen up!

I think, it is strange that a vet would make a statement like that, and I am sure your puppy wasn't the first to yelp when it was given a shot.

I never heard about a statement like that... I think the vet did a lousy job to make her cry. None of mine ever cried when they got an injection and that has nothing to do with toughen them up... stupid thing to say anyway... how would you do that? Poke them several times a day until they get used to it? jeeeezzz.....

I find it odd that the vet would reply that way. How would he react if someone 10 times his size jabbed him with a needle? My suggestion....get a new vet.

It has happened to some of my animals before and with different vets.

OMG what a stupid thing for the vet to say!
Some dogs yelp and some dont she should know that being a vet.
My older dog Jess dosnt yelp when she gets an injection but my puppy Poppy goes WILD she hates them.
Im sure she's not too spoilt, she just dosnt like needles being jabbed into her!

I don't think it was professional of the vet to say that...

I've never heard Harley yelp with a needle, but this is what my vet does...

He puts him on the table... does his check up... gives him a treat, hold the puppy in one hand (cause he was still small enough) the needle in the other (out of eye shot) cuddles him, talks to him, rubs the spot, needle in and done. Followed by hugs and another treat....

I've also seen vets with larger animals, tap on the spot the needle is going in (I used to this to inject my horses), you tap and tap and it makes the spot numb, and then on one of the taps, in goes the needle.

There are several tricks to make it as painless as possible, if your vet doesn't do this, you may want to look for a more gentle and professional acting vet.

There is nothing unusual about small puppies yelping when getting a shot, your vet is very unprofessional if he told you that. Shots hurt, and some puppies yelp, or squeal, while others just seem to winch, but it is usual for this reaction.

That vet seems to not know what he is talking about. I took my two puppies in for their 8 week shots together and one sat still and tried to run away, while one laid their a cried until my boyfriend cuddled her then she started licking his face. They are like children some can handle pain for shots some can't.

My vet would say that Millie is very "expressive". He is close to retiring and has seen lots of what he calls "very loved" pets. He said the more loved they are, the more expressive they get, making their displeasure known. He often has pets that start yelping even before he touches them. However, that being said, I think you are right to find a new vet if she's too rough.

See? Our babies are "loved" and "expressive", that's a good thing
