| Getting Maximus used to being confined..... So after our disaster flying...I decided that maximus needs to be used to being confined once in a while, whether in his crate or in a carrier because he has an ABSOLUTE FIT!!! Nobella gave me some advice and I started crating him for 10 minutes last night and then 10 minutes this morning (I only let him out when he stooped barking)..for those 10 minutes he screamed his lungs off and was barking like someone was torturing him-->kinda reminded me of my flight from Cali...lol. But I was wondering if anyone has some other suggestions???..I am gonna gradually increase the time he in in his crate to 15 minutes and then 20...but I feel so bad, he gets himself soo worked up about the whole thing

| This is just a thought, but you might start with just a few seconds and sit there with him and if he's quiet for those few seconds then you could let him out and give him a treat. You might try that and keep increasing the time incrementally by minutes.

| yes totally agree.. that is what i did in the beginning when i first got Chicle .. another thing you have to do it in a stern voice say NO BARKING.. well in my case i placed him in there when he was gonna go to sleep ..so i would say CHICLE GO TO SLEEP! eventually he got the idea and stopped barking all together.. to the point that now whenever i put him in there and to noises or things that he would bark to if he were to FREE.. he wont bark . b/c he knows he has to be quiet inside his crate. sometimes he tries to be a wise guy and you hear a MUFFLED BARK lmaooooooo soooooooooo cute!

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Maximus is just used to getting his way. I'm not sure why you have to stay in the room? Trace was not a big fan of his crate when he was younger. He trained us to let him sleep in our bed, but he does ride in it to and from work. He got so he screamed the entire ride....uggghh. I learned I was better off ignoring him, because ANY reponse from me....brought the noise on bigger and better, so to speak. Eventually he learned he wasn't getting out for any amount of noise, period. Now he's happy as a clam in there, doesn't protest any way. He's slept in it when we've gone away without a peep....couple of times, he's sleep there instead of OUR bed. He naps in there on his own, in fact. Also remember Maximus thinks if he screams long enough....he gets out. He doesn't realize that he was quiet for 2 minutes. He's ok, safe, and unharmed....he's just doesn't WANT to be in there. And sometimes you don't get what you want Good luck and I'm glad I wasn't on that plane

| So are you saying I should leave him in there for longer???...I thought I should gradually move the time up..but I will be open to any suggestions, lol!!!! Maximsu used to sleep in bed with me, but now he sleeps in the living room gated..I can honestly say I never ever crated him for more then 15 minutes MAX....so this is all a learning experience..I would love advice from someone who also had a SCREECHER!!

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Well, I wasn't suggesting longer necessarily. I had lots of advice....hitting the crate, saying hush, etc. etc.....NONE of that worked. Trace is a big momma's boy....where I am...he WANTS to be. If I put him in the crate and he KNEW I was right there....he screamed and pawed at the sides. I finally just started ignoring him. In the car when he would finally quiet down, he didn't get out, cause obviously we were still in the car. I think it just finally dawned on him, he wasn't gonna get out no matter what. Now he likes it. I say that cause he goes in it to nap or chew a treat. If you go this route, how 'bout putting him in when you get in the shower or perhaps take a quick trip to a store? I know he sounds pitiful, but he is OK I can only imagine what other drivers must of thought this past summer.....here I am.... apparently driving without a care in the world...killing a dog. He was THAT loud

| Girl I know the LOUD PART...TRUST ME, Maximus sounded as if he was being slaughtered!!!! The only thing is I don't want my landlord to kill me if he is SCREAMING AT 6:30 am..lol, so I have been doing it around 6 at night...lol, at least noone is leeping...but I will definitely try the car thing this weekend...I usually just let him sit on my lap...but I don't care what the other cars think..especially since I bought him a carseat that he HAS to get used to...God forbid I was ever in an accident
