| Help a new mom out, please! Hi! I'm new to this forum, but I have been lurking for the past few days and people here are so helpful and smart! Hopefully you can help me. I have a new Morkie pup. He's 15 weeks old. We've had him for about a week and a half now. Occasionally he makes this hacking/gagging sound. Sometimes it sounds like he threw up, but nothing comes out. Maybe he's swallowing it? It only happens when he's sleeping. He'll wake up, make the noise, then either go back to sleep or get up and do something. It normally lasts no longer than 5 seconds. As soon as it started happening, I freaked out, but my boyfriend told me I'm just being paranoid, which I do have a tendancy to do. I've tried not to worry and I've been keeping an eye on him. Other than this noise, he seems perfectly normal. I did research and thought it might just be reverse sneezing, but I'm also wondering if it could be kennel cough or tracheal collapse. Anyway, I didn't want to run to the vet over every little thing, but last night he did this gagging noise a lot, so I'm really worried. I'll probably take him to the vet today, but I was hoping someone might have some useful info to help calm me. Thanks in advance. |

| Okay, I have an appointment for 4 today to get him checked out. I'm so worried, I wish they could have taken him sooner! We just let him out of his crate and he's running around playing like normal and not gagging at all. This is so stressful! |

| Did you take him in for a wellness check right after you got him? If not, you might want to take the time now and have him checked all over. That'll give you even more piece of mind.

| It would be good if you could get this on video to show your vet. If he's like my dogs, he'll get to the vet and not make the noise. Congrats on your new baby...I hope you get it figured out!

| I think I'd most describe the sound as a gagging. We had him checked out the day after we got him and everything was fine. I do have a short video but it's not the best example and the battery on my camera died before I could get more. Thanks for the help and well wishes everyone. And Dzbabykel, my pup's name is Oliver too! |

| Just got back from the vet. He diagnosed Oliver with kennel cough. I'm not sure how he got it since he doesn't go out. Anyway, he said we caught it early so there shouldn't be any complications. We have antibiotics to give him for 2 weeks. As much as I don't like seeing Oliver suffer in any way, I'm glad it's not something more serious. We'll do our best to keep Oliver comfortable until he's better. We're going to pick up a humidifier for him, especially for at night when he's sleeping and seems to suffer most. I've read you can give your dog yogurt when they're taking antibiotics. Would this be a good idea? I know not to give him sweetened yogurt, but does anyone recommend a certain brand? And how much should I give him (he's 3 pounds)? Thanks for all the help! I've been doing so much research since we got him I feel like I'm overloaded lol |

| HAHA! You're going to fit right in! I was on this board for two years before getting Kaji. I felt very well informed.I'm glad Oliver was diagnosed early. Do you think he could have gotten kennel cough from the breeder? As for yogurt, atablespoon or two will be ok; go with anything low fat and simple ingredients. The simpler the better. I've been known to steal my dad's organic plain or vanilla yogurt for Kaji. But just a tablespoon or two.
