| SPCA to euthanize 350 animals CTV Toronto - Province won't intervene in SPCA euthanizations - CTV News I heard about this one the radio this morning before work, and pretty much had a fairly crappy day because of it. I just don't understand WHY there isn't something else that can be done, some other option. It's heartbreaking, and it's already begun... RIP sweet babies... you all deserved a fate so much better than this.....

| Uh how bad does that suck. From my understanding tho ringworm isn't just a one treatment and done kind of thing. With that amount of animals i can understand the problem with curbing the spread. Treatments can take several months and doses and in that time frame they cant take on any other animals. Im pretty sure it can be passed thru rubber mats and unless concrete is treated with some form of a bleach treatment it can spread even thru that. lets hope that there protocols are followed more strictly from this point on. So that something like this NEVER has to happen again. From the article it wasn't clear if it was careless ness or lack of training that caused the oversite. I do have to agree with the part in the article I do hope they thought out every option before this choice was chosen. Im sure the employees at the center had an even harder day then most would think. So while I'll say a prayer for all these animals lives I will also say a prayer that the emotional toll doesn't waver there faith in trying to save animals in the future. |

| This place is supposed to be a shelter? Ringworm is treatable. Even if it may be an involved treatment that takes a while, it still makes much more sense to me than to kill those innocent animals who can't speak for themselves. So sad.

| It is very sad that human error may have caused this outbreak to reach such a level. I know everyone makes mistakes...it is just not everyday 350 innocent animals suffer such a fate because of it. |

| I agree with you Connie... These animals deserve more than this... I look at my Oliver and think that he could very well have ended up at a shelter had his rescue from the mill been different.. While I feel for the employee's, if I were employed there I would REFUSE to do it and would likely quit. No, I am definitely not cut out to work in shelters, and I know that thousand are PTS each and every day... But this is so large scale, and I can't help but wonder if someone's PET is in there... some beloved pet that got out of the yard and ended up at the SPCA, now faces this fate. I just can't even wrap my head around it... this whole thing just seems so wrong...

The THS president made some excellent points. "The solution for these shelters when they do have outbreak incidents should not be to simply kill all the animals to remedy the problem. "The OSPCA is taking the easy solution rather than working to save animals lives. | |

| We are traveling thru Canada and spent the night in Barrie last night and I saw that on the news also. I agree, it just doesn't seem right, but supposedly they have tried different treatments and have not been able to control the ringworm. All day I have been depressed over it and can't even imagine putting down that many animals, so very, very sad. Have they actually done it already? They are not going to try any other options? |

| They say that have tried other options to get it under control and all have failed. 6 of the people working there have also contracted it. The killing has already begun. It will likely take the better part of this week to complete it...

| Just heard on the radio - human error is to blame (which we knew), someone has been fired because of it (hardly seems like a strong enough punishment, and she's claiming to be the scapegoat), the killing started yesterday ( ), and some of the animals will apparently be saved (how many? How do you choose which animals will get a chance to live, and which will die? Why not save them ALL?) Going to work sad once again...

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Even sadder than this mass euthansia is the fact that there are dogs and cats being killed in this country in staggering numbers We get upset for sure hearing about this when it didn't have to happen - but it isn't anything new - our country puts hundreds maybe even thousands of healthy dogs/cats to sleep every single day Our shelters are full and always have been and in this day and age - the numbers should be less - but they aren't. We now have media touting ADOPT shelter pets and rescue but the problem is just too big and until people wake up it will continue. I'd love to see a cap on all the mass breeding going on - which I don't see happening anytime soon may all those poor pets rest in peace......that's truly sad. |
