YAAAY!! Going to get her 5/6!! NEED ADVICE!!

OK fellow YT'ers, i found her!!! a woman who has 2 yorkies is rehoming one of her babies with me!!! she lives across the country, so i am going to go get her next month and bring her home with me!!

she's 18 months old, AKC registered and healthy. apparently, when they got her 6 months ago, her family wasn't expecting the "personality plus" they got from this little girl, as her other yorkie and her entire family is very mellow. that being said, they are not meshing too well and they don't seem able to find the time necessary to train her properly. fortunately, their loss is my gain!!

the plan is for me to meet her and we'll go the same day to the vet to get her health certificate and pick up her records. then i'll bring her back with me!!! i know that i will have to book her travel back with the airline.

any suggestions on things i need to do to prepare for her arrival and how i can make her transition as smooth as possible are invited and completely welcome, as i will be a first-time mommy!!

btw, 2 specific questions: 1) i understand that she does not like a leash and pulls away from it, but i do plan to use one on her, so any suggestions as to how best to accomplish that would be great. 2) apparently, they tried to crate train her, but she wasn't having any of it and they gave up. any advice on whether this is necessary at her age and the best way to accomplish it would be appreciated.

I would get her a step in type body harness for her to use with a leash. Not a collar and leash. Or a puppia harness. It may be a good idea to give her rescue remedy a few days before she travels with you to calm her down. Put her favorite blanket and/or toy into the carrier you'll have her in while flying. When I fly with my dogs I like to use a soft sided crate with screen 'windows' on all five sides so she gets air and can see me from all angles.

Good luck and just be calm and loving to her while she transitions to her new forever home.

I have flown lots of years first with Toffee, and now with Mr.Darcy, and next time with him and Lizzie!!! Anyway - if you get a 'middle' seat, there is a plastic box under the seat in front of you (this is where you have to put the carrier), so the carrier doesn't go under far enough for some flight attendants. Window seats are good, as there is no obstruction......don't forget to point the 'air nozzle' down on the carrier - it can get hot and stuffy down there. They always tell me I can't open the carrier on the plane - so I wait until we are in the air, and unzip the top enough to get my hand in, and make sure my baby is OK!!! Also, if you are in the window seat, they can't see the carrier that well!

Forgot to add - don't forget the water! I have a soft collapsible water bowl I keep in my purse and get water from the attendant.

she's in maryland at the moment and she weighs 3 lbs ... perfect weight for me ... and i hear she's a jumper, so she shouldn't have any problem getting up on her own ... but maybe i should get some stairs so she doesn't jump down ... hmmmmm

If she can already get up and down on her own, I would get a set of stairs, 1. it puts less pressure on their joints and is better for them each time they use the stairs, 2. it will be better for your back if you can have her get up on something on her own and then lift her from there.

Also, I have an XS puppyone harness (like the puppia but both the neck and stomach area are adjustable) that I would be happy to send to you so that you have something to bring her home in until you can see her and fit her to something you like... it is hot pink and in excellent condition... send me a PM with your address if you are interested.

It looks like you have gotten some great advicce already (or that is my excuse for not giving any) I want to say Congratualtions on getting your girl, I hope the time goes by really fast, it is so hard to wait sometimes.

thanks for the tips!! i looked up the rescue remedy and it seems pretty good. i'm a big believer in natural remedies. it says to use 4 drops and i'm wondering if that's for a larger dog. she's only 3 lbs, so i want to be mindful of not overdosing her on anything ... what are your thoughts? also, why do you use it a few days prior and not just on the day? do you feel that it works better?

Congrats on getting your girl! That is so totally exciting! Can't wait to hear all the stories and see pictures! It's going to be great! Enjoy being a first time mommy and her size sounds perfect!! :-)

They may have even been using a collar on her or an uncomfortable harness. Congratulations on your girl. You'll know more of what you need when you get home with her. Yorkies aren't shy about telling you what they want.

From those that I know that use rescue remedy, they taught me to start a few days ahead to help them be more calm. So I've always started rescue remedy 2 days before travel.. More for Madison my yorkie. Lexie my maltese has always been a calm traveler. I have given Lexie rescue remedy before going to the vet ( 2 days before) it was a noticable difference in how she was acting. Its nice to have her calm vs. drugged. if that makes any sense.
My dog weighs just over 5 lbs and I do the 4 drops in her water and a drop or 2 on her tongue the night before and the morning of. From what others that swear by Rescue Remedy say you cant give to much. Maybe we'll hear what others have to say.

Congrats on your new baby girl! Have you decided on a name yet? Have you started shopping for all sorts of goodies? (you know you have!! )
I'm so excited!! After you two settle in, we'll have to set a play date!! I feel like I'm getting a new puppy too. Even though she's not a baby, I would suggest you still have an ex-pen handy. Bring with you her favorite blanket and toys, and have those in the ex-pen. It'll be helpful as she'll have something she knows is hers in a house that is new to her. Some dogs don't need comfort items, as they bond super quick to their new family, but it's better to be prepared. CONGRATS!!!!
