| Can I kennel train my dog after pee pad training her for a year?? Good morning everyone, Well Bailey is fully pee pad trained, she is a year and 4 months old. She is baby gatted in the kitchen during the day. I am moving back to my home town accross Canada at the end of June and want to consentrate to train her to go potty outside. The best way to train them during the day is to kennel train them and her bladder is already able to hold it for 8+ hours as most times when we come home after work there is nothing on the pee pad. But my issue is will she be confused, will she be mad at me for putting her in a kennel when we are not home instead of a full kitchen? Will I have to chase her around everyday to put her int he kennel?? She already barks when we leave home will this be worst?? I know I will leave her water in the kennel but should I leave her food as well?? and once I am home I know it is for me to keep bringing her outside and consistancy that will help and LOTS of praise... she already rings a bell at my door to go play outside so that is good Oh one more thing while I train her to go outside should I leave her pee pad inside the house or illiminate it?? Thanks for any inputs I will open another thread asking my questions about the BIG move..lol

| Those are some very good questions. I know that around the same age that your baby is, I went in the opposite direction. (from outside potty to pee pads) Trust me it can be done! As far as how to go about it.... well... I'm a little lost there. Kaji came pre-trained to use the potty outside so I have no idea how to go about it. I'm a big anti crating person. While I completely understand the concept, I don't like the idea of it, but that's just me. Does she go potty immediately after you come home? What I would do in your shoes is I wouldn't change how I'm keeping her during the day. She's use to it and she doesn't even use the pee pad when you're gone anyway. As soon as you wake up in the mornings, take her out. Use whatever command you use inside to let her know it's potty time (I use "go pee pee"). Give her a chance to sniff a bit and make sure she potties. Go back inside, do your regular morning ritual, then right before you leave, take her out again. When you leave, leave her in the kitchen like you usually do, and at first, leave a pee pad for her. As soon as you get back home, immediately take her out, then again before bed. Give her as many opportunities as you can for her to succeed and over time she will get it. It's hard to go from what they know to a new system. Kaji still gets excited when he's allowed to potty outside. He actually gets giddy. He's really good with the pee pad now, but I know he secretly would rather pee on a tree.

| I did with Bella. She was pee pad trained before I moved to NC and now inside my apartment, it's just not an option. It took her a few months to where she didn't have an accident. I just needed to be consistent with her. She's 3 now.

| I have found that the best way to train outside after the pee pad is to slowly move the pad towards the door each day. It will take time for a process but it can be done. |

unfortunatly I cannot do that because once I leave the kitchen it is ALL carpet (which I am sure I could manage) but then there is 12 set of stairs to go up because I live in a basement suite and I couldnt let her roam around them during the day or try to put a pee pad on them very narrow and all carpet as well...I was suggested that before but didnt work... thanks though in other situations it would be great

| I wish I could help you, but I am trying to train, my almost pad trained 1 1/2 yr yorkie) to go outside. She will pee outside, but never do her other business out there. Could you leave her in the bathroom with a pad during the day?

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | lol - it's usually the opposite - mine are both - and it's a process with some but can be done - you're doing the right thing with lots of praise and hopefully someone will have better advise - these little guys can be a bit stubborn - some are wonderful (my first Chanel was) and Cheri took 11 months - you'd think she'd have caught on faster with a big sister showing her the ropes |

| Wrigley was pee pad trained by the breeder, so that part was a breeze. We already had Crosley who only potties outside (she's 17-18lbs) so Wrigley would go out with her and potty there or her pad with no real training on our part. I don't think she was typical with potty training, we got lucky! Camden was a breeding dog who was 2 1/2 when we got her. So I think the poor little thing was used to going potty wherever she could! We have had her for two years and honestly it's been in the last 6-9 months that she's been more consistent about either using the pad or going outside. (vs the floor ) We just praised every potty when she would go on the pad or outside, we don't ever scold for accidents. We got to know her habits and usual times of going and would take her to the pad or outside and make sure she went and praise again. She honestly will still have an occasional accident, but she's sooo greatly improved. She's funny because she will do both out or inside, but she prefers to pee out and poop inside, go figure! It takes a lot of hard work, consistency & patience. They will get it, but some are faster! Do you free feed now? We don't otherwise only one dog would get to eat (Crosley) I would leave water though for sure. We use a bell for Crosley too. Camden rings it, but it's usually for playing or because she hears a noise!

| So I tried putting Bailey outside as soon as we got up, she was excited to go outside but never did she potty after I let her inside again because it was taking to long she went and pee'd on her pad?? lol she is not grasping the concept of "you are aloud to go potty outside that it is ok" I Will try and bring her outside as soon as I get home tonight and see if she will potty outside or hold it in until we get inside...lol

| I take it you are gone all day at work? May I ask why when you move have she can't have pee pads in the kitchen anymore? If you are home with her I think retraining her to outside would be doable, but if you are gone all day I think allowing her to have the option to relieve herself on pads is much kinder. I'm sure you have to potty several times during the day while you are at work. I would try to cross train her if I were you. Train her to potty outside when you are able to take her out, but leave pads down for her to use when you are not or the weather is bad. |

I am moving back to my parents and they will not allow pee pads and they have other dogs that are trained to go potty outside and she doesnt want to confuse them either... it is another yorkie actually. and Bailey can hold it in all day she does not potty when I leave for work until I get home(maybe once in a while she does) And I have NOT yet kennelled her she still has free range of the kitchen. Just wanting peoples opinion first. Bailey doesnt even eat or drink while I am gone to work.. I am pretty sure she sleeps most of the day...her food and water dish are still full once I get home. But anywho about the pee pads we need to get rid of the habbit. It is for the better. Thanks
