Hello all!

I have a four month old yorkie and we are having the absolute hardest time housebreaking him. I will take him outside for thirty minutes and he never goes. As soon as I take him inside, he goes! I am crate training him, but that doesn't matter because it doesnt bother him to soil his blanket it his crate. Please help!!! He is ruining our carpet and it is getting very frustrating!!

We live in an apartment on the 3rd story. Would puppy pads make a difference?

now, I know it will take lots longer than 7 days, but the basic gist seems helpful...its what I am working off of, plus my pups have ex-pens and i have the disposable pee pads in there just in case.

housebreaking can easily be achieve with consistency....dogs will eventually have the routine down....being that he is still a puppy...you would need to take him out first thing when he wakes up....after playing....5-10 minutes of eating and drinking....after naps and before bed....use the "go potty" command. Take him outside for 20 minutes of on a short walk...when he does his business...use a special treat like cheerios or whatever his favorite is....praise praise and praise...he will learn to associate going potty in the right spot with yummy treats...and as he gets it down you can just praise him without treats if you wish....if he doesn't go when you are out....take him back in and place him in his crate...repeat 5-10 minutes later...

also make sure his crate is only big enough for him to stand, sit and lay down...if it is too big he can potty on one side and sleep on another.

It does get better I promise.....

I use disposable potty pads...and have had wonderful results....I leave one in back of kennel in a puppy pan...and one out in ex pen...It was rough when we added Bella a couple weeks ago, like starting all over, but am happy to say, last 4 days have been a success...she is 12 weeks tommorrow...

I figured puppy pads would work better for me, but Dixon doesn't even sniff the ground before he relieves himself. He just goes!

I thought I would go Insane while housebreaking Thomas..Insane I tell you!!!! Plus when we adopted him, he was so sickly and wormy..on many meds..so his poop was always..always..runny! My carpet? Disgusting!!!!

He did the same thing..take him out..Nothing. Bring him in? Poop! I started taking him out about every 30 minutes or so...and eventually he grasped what he was supposed to do!
Altho he is one that will never hold it for too long ..or let me know he has to go..I promise it does get better!

I use puppy pads but they also go outside. When it's raining it's so hard to get them to go outside so the puppy pads are great.

Great advice though from the other posts.
