So frustrated... can't potty train Pix and she's almost 2 Y/O Pix will be 2 in May/10. I got her as a birthday gift in August/08, she was 3 months old. I am experienced with potty training dogs, I know I am not a pro but I was always able to potty train my dogs. I had many boxers, very stubborn, but before 1 year they were totally trained. We live in Florida, so extreme weather is not a problem. I also have cats, and my french door to the backyard is open pretty much all day. I close it at night, though, because the cats love to hunt and bring mice. So I have been training Pix forever, doing what I always did with other dogs, and she doesn't seem to get it. She can spend one whole week without an accident, then she will pee and poop anywhere in the house for the next week. What I do : when I see poop or pee in the wrong place, I pick her up, show it to her, speak strongly and use short words such a NO ! BAD !, and take her outside saying OUT! When I see she finished a meal, I take her out , and nothing ever happens. Seems she saves all potty to when I am not looking. She doesn't have a favorite place in the house. It can be any rug, any room, even hallways, kitchen, even right by the OPEN door where she would have to take 3 more steps and go. We have a boxer who is 7 and goes out everytime, and waits until I open the door in the morning. PLease advise ! She already ruined a good 8X10 rug and I am constantly fighting odors in the house. Very, very frustrated. Thanks for any hint !!! Ana

Suggestions from books and posts here on YT: Taking her out right after mealtime might be a little too soon. Try waiting 20 - 30 minutes. Take her out more frequently and always praise her when she does things right. Never stop praising. The scent of her indoor accidents has to be eliminated with an enzyme cleaner like Nature's Miracle, otherwise she will return to the spots to potty again. Many experts consider scolding counterproductive. Try skipping it.

Senior Yorkie Talker | I have a Dachshund that used to do the same thing. I blamed my self after a while because he was my first small dog and my dad always handled our big dogs. I got a potty training book, finally. It says to take them out 15-20 minutes after they eat. You dont jump up and poop do you? LOL! (maybe occasionaly) Take her out every 2 hours or so. If she doesn't get it after that, crate her and only let her out to potty. Play with her ONLY after she potties OUTSIDE. Try not to scold, I found out that; that is completely useless. They don't care. Lol! I hope this helps, I honestly know how frustrated you are!

Thanks to both for your replies. I do use Nature's Miracle, I don't think it works, though. If I can smell the pee, no doubt a dog will too. I am now thinking of rolling all rugs in the house, at least they will last longer ! Will try taking her outside after a longer time after she eats. There are 2 problems here.. I may not be home when she eats.. and also if I am, the door is always open !!! When I realize, she already went anywhere else. I just wanted to hear from you experienced Yorkie moms and dads that, even she being almost 2, that can be corrected... I will not give up! =)

I think crating is a good thing, when my Dallas peepees on the floor we put him in his room. But I find that he will go in the house when he has not had much exercise, he LOVE to go for walks outside or play ball at the park. I too do not think that Nature's Miracle works !! Good Luck. _________________________ Cassandra 's Dallas!!
