| New Yorkie Owner Hello everyone. I'm new to this community and a new yorkie owner. His name is Toby, he's 3 1/2 years old and he's a rescue from a puppy mill. He was rescued from the puppy mill about a year ago and his foster mom was absolutely wonderful with him. She raised him with three yorkies of her own and a poodle and cats. I've only had him a week. He's made lots of progress but still isn't the lap dog I'm wanting him to be but am told in time it will happen and I see that coming in the near future. He's still a bit skittish when you approach him. But he's so adorable..........even at 3 1/2 years old he's only about 90% housebroken. I will do a search in the forums for tips on raising a rescue dog and any advice you have will be welcomed. I LOVE TAKING pictures so you will probably see lots of pics from me. LOL I also have a shichon named Speedy and she loves having another dog in the house and a new playmate. But they are still "learning" each other's habits. I look forward to being a part of this community! Dianne (Di) Last edited by diannenet; 12-14-2009 at 10:12 PM. Reason: adding photo |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk! This place is wonderful... I am fairly new, but I can't get enough of it on here haha. CONGRATULATIONS on your new baby and I am so happy that you resuced! That is so wonderful..... your new furbaby will be so greatful to you for saving him forever. I have 2 yorkies. Hendrix is 4 and he has NEVER been a lap dog. He is the sweetest little thing and he loves his mommy so much, but he likes to sit NEXT to me haha. He is very independant. Lucy on the other hand has been a little snugglebug since the day we brought her home (she is 6 months now) SHe has to be touching me at all times. It is so sweet. I think once you build your relationship with Toby and he trusts you he will love to cuddle. Goodluck with your new little angel--- this community is so wonderful whenever you have questions and concerns. THe only thing I have heard about caring for rescue dogs is that you need to be VERY VERY VERY PATIENT!!! They are exceptionally sensitive--- so just give little Toby extra love and attention. ANd as far as the potty training goes- again, be patient. It took me close to two years to get Hendrix perfect.... and honestly, he still has accidents. They are soooo stuborn. Yorkies are known for being reallly difficult to housebreak. but patience patience patience and LOTS AND LOTS of PRAISE!!!! I have been told that PRAISE works much better than discipline. Enjoy your new furbaby! |
