I know this has been debated so many times but (ding! Ding!) everyone to thier corner! lol I just got my baby boy Ares and he is CKC reg. Now my questions is as a pet owner (I don't intend to stud him out but IF I change my mind) what are the pros and cons? Also I want to adopt another yorkie very soon (and a Maltese baby too

should I go Ckc again or Akc? I'm not a pro and the internet only helps so much! I want to rescue a yorkie as well!

Any info is welcome! Btw when we relocate again (Active Duty Marine hubby) We are planning to buy a home next enlistment and 5 dogs would make our fam bam complete!

If I was buying a pet, I would not care if it had papers. I have had a number of AKC champion-sired/dam pets and never bothered to even register... Papers mean nothing to me unless I want to show/breed...but the price needs to reflect the registery JMO..others feel strongly in not supporting non-AKC breeders..I feel strongly about not supporting millers, shops and unethical breeders.

CKC is not a reputable canine registry. All you need is pics & a witness to say it's this breed & that.
Why do you want to 'stud' out your pup? Do you know his line/pedigree? Is he tested? Is he a good representative of the breed? Does he have Champions in his line (I doubt it, bc CKC isn't allowed to show)?
I think before asking questions like this, you should read up on breeding & the commitment it takes to be a responsible reputable breeder. I think it's great that you want to rescue.

I totally agree. However I would do my research and make sure I feel comfortable with the breeder and the heath of the puppies.

I wouldn't breed a dog that wasn't AKC or Canadian Kennel Club registered.

CKC is one of the "alternative" registries that was formed when the AKC toughened their rules and started to require DNA testing, etc. As Jenny pointed out, the CKC doesn't hold any shows so there is no way to judge if a CKC Yorkie is close to the breed standard. A responsible breeder always starts with two parents who are as close to the breed standard as possible.

Intact males who are used as studs can be very difficult to live with. They mark and will be so obsessed with a female in heat that they can even stop eating. Neutered males make wonderful pets. Just make sure you have Ares neutered as soon as possible, before he ever starts marking as the behavior can be hard to break once he starts.

Adopting a rescue is a great way to get a wonderful pet. There are so many Yorkies and Maltese in need of forever homes through no fault of their own. Please adopt one (or more

) instead of bringing more Yorkies into the world. The market is already saturated with pet quality Yorkies looking for homes.

I only buy Akc now but I do have a CKC girl that I wouldn't trade for all my AKC ones. She has the best temperment and personality. She is also closer to standard than my champion sired male. Most of the people I sell to could care less what papers they have if any. They are more concerned on how they are raised and the looks of the parents.

Thank you for the replies, I did try to read up on the differences but I wanted some feedback, and opinions. I don't think I will keep Ares intact, our 1 year old boxer is getting fixed very soon as we already have some issues with marking. I am excited to adopt a yorkie from a rescue! I've looked at a few, but with orders always changing on where I'm gonna be stationed I can't seem to find one close. As of right now Fl seems to have the closest rescue. I love all the info on YT! Thanx for everything! If you have any info on rescues that are close to Al please drop me a line!
