I would like to fence an area about 22' square for Jonah to go out and pee! He would not be left out there for any length of time without me but I still want to make sure he would not be able to escape. I am thinking about a vinyl fence. How far apart should the vertical slates be and how high should the fence be. It would also be nice if the rabbits would not get in.

Just get one of those vinyl fences at Pet Smart, that is what I have and when it snows I can bring it in close to the house. They are collapsable and roomy enough for them. I'm afraid to leave him out to long bc I worry about Eagles picking him up and away. I know they are around and I've heard its happened.

I'm curious about this, too. We live on 3 acres of land unfenced, but I want to make a little area where I can just open the door and let Jackson out safely to go pee when I don't feel like walking him around on his flexi :P or at night-time. I do have an ex-pen but it's not very big, I'd probably need 4 of them to make a significant enough area.

Thanks for thoughts on Petsmart but I am looking to put in permanent fencing and like Britster I live on approximately 3 acres open land. I am working with a landscape artist and she is not familiar with requirements for a dog this small.

I use 2 metal xpens attached together and then out one end on each side of my sliding glass door and it works great. I never let them out alone but I an open the slider and they can run out and I just stay on the stoop.

I have yet to do this yet lol. But I'm just now researching again. Do you happen to know the dimensions of those pens? I was looking at these:

But I feel like it's so small! Even with two, I think it would seem small, but maybe that's just because my boy is almost 13lbs.

The biggest issue I've been having, is our sliding glass door leads out to a patio and I want him to have grass too, so the area is gonna have to be even larger to reach out to the grass, here's a picture I took from my sliding glass door.

We had white vinyl fencing around our patio area before we got Roxy. The kind you get at home stores & fencing companies. The bars are about 3" apart which is too far apart for most yorkies. DH lined the fencing with some 2"x4" wire fencing about 3-4 ft high, fastening it onto the vinyl with those nylon ties. I didn't think I'd like the way it looks, but it doesn't look all that bad since our sitting area is up by the house. It works great for her & she's got an area about 25' x 80' long yard to play in. She absolutely loves it.

Some yorkies are great jumpers, so don't underestimate the needed height. The space between bars will depend on the width of your dogs. Need to be close enough that they won't be able to squeeze through.

We've had no rabbits or even chipmunks up near the house all year. Think that's got more to do with Roxy than the fencing. : )

In my situation I also have the patio immediately outside the sliding glass door, and pottying doesn't normally happen on concrete. The patio is 22' X22 ' My thought (because I never use the patio) is to tear up some of the concrete and replace it with grass and other materials, add a few plants etc., I thought perhaps I would need the wire fence between the vertical slats.Height ...because on an agility course Jonah never gets above about ten inches, 3 1/2 feet might suffice. On the other hand he easily jumps on my bed, at least 36 inches high. So I don't know if the different kind of jumping correlates. Thanks for the information I will continue exploring this.

we used black vinyl mesh. Came in a role from Home Depot. We used 2inch by 2inch treated wood for posts. ours is 24inches high but the roles came higher as well, like 36" and 48". I would go at least 36" if you want to keep him in it unsupervised or 48 if he is a jumper. Our mesh squares are about one inch in size. The black actually looks nice. It doesn't look like orange construction fencing or anything tacky like that.

I just read the rest of these...you don't need to tear up the patio if it slopes a bit. Ours is on a concrete patio. we just placed a treated wood frame 2 inch high directly on the concrete(we made the potty pen 30 inches by 8 feet) we put 3/4 inch crush rock in the frame and Eva goes right on the rock. so the 2ft high mesh fence goes around this entire rock area. When she pees it drains between the rock and down the slope of the patio so she never steps in it. I rinse the rock off very often too. I am loving it, it is so clean.

I have only walked Max before. But a nice little turn out where I can watch them go and then they run back in would be nice in the winter.

We recently moved our love seat so the back faces the dining room. It's 31" high. By the second day, Roxy was easily jumping onto it. She is 7 lbs-11 oz & 10-1/2 high. So the 36 inches would be the shortest I would go w/fencing. If a yorkie saw something worth chasing on the other side, jumping 36" might not be to high to try for. Good luck with it.

The frame with crushed rock sounds interesting. How does the mesh fence stay up? Do you have a gate to the area or is it accessed from door? If accessed from the door how do you get to the rest of patio /yard.

I had the same problem inside and found the perfect solution. This pen is great, and it is pretty big! It has a nice gate to get out off (or in) and you don't have to worry about the puppy getting out. It is movable and has pins to drive into the ground.
It is called the Courtyard Dog Kennel.
