I have a 6 lb Yorkie that is three years old. We are thinking of installing a doggie door in our new home to allow him access to the outside for potty time. My question is this: Have any of you used one of those doggie doors that you install in your back door and has this been successful with such a small dog? Do any of you have specific recommendations of a type or brand of door that works best?

I have a doggie door that leads to a small enclosed pet yard outside and it works great! They use it very well, except when it rains :-(, so I have potty pads inside as well for those times.

As long as large birds/hawks etc can't get at them or other preditors...I think it is wonderful...

I have a doggie door that mounts in a window, with steps leading up to it inside & outside. It's placed under my covered patio, but they still don't like to go out when it's raining.

I thought very carefully before getting a doggie door. I patrol the fence at least once a week looking for potential danger spots or holes. My neighbors' dogs are all friendly & well behaved, but I don't want to take any chance with my kiddos. Also, I live in a very new neighborhood with only a few small trees, so I have seen very few large birds that I would normally be concerned about. So far, it's worked out great for us.

I too have a doggie door that leads into a 12x12 fully enclosed with a top and most of them use it. My DH put a soild awning over the top of the pen so most of them will continue to use it when it rains. I also keep pee pads inside. I just recently put a strip of artifical grass on the dirt and they love it and use it all the time.

I got one for Lola from home depot Ideal Pet Products 10.5 In. x 15 In. Extra Large Bronze Pet Patio Door - 80PATXLB at The Home Depot

It works great! She has access to the deck and her pad and love to go out everytime she hears someone. She's very nosey...lol

I am sure my DH would do it for you if we were closer to you. He is really great in that way.

I use a doggie door in a glass insert for sliding glass doors. It works well. It was originally purchased for larger dogs, but it doesn't really deter the Yorkies at all: they just get a corner to move and slide on through.

If yours is a small Yorkie and you don't ever plan on a larger dog, you may be better off with a door designed for cats: they're smaller and lighter, offering less resistance.

I've thought about putting one in my bedroom door: I sleep with the door closed, and they're constanting wanting to go in/out, depending on what's going on in the rest of the house.

I have a doggie door and my two puppies use it. I too patrol the fence on a regular basis and make sure there is no way for them to escape. They are hesitant about going out when it rains and for those days I keep the Nature's Miracle handy. They also use the door to go out and play and when they hear something that is not supposed to be there. They may be only 5 lbs (and less) but watch out!

We have a cat door and both my yorkies - 7.5 and 5.5 lbs go thru it and I have a 12lbs pom mix that goes thru it also very easily. I have one yorkie that will go outside no matter the weather to go potty and the pom mix will too. But I have another yorkie that does not like to go if there is inclement weather, so we do put a potty pad down. They love the door, because they can run out the door and bark at things that come along the way.

My girls also use a doggie door. My oldest girl was 8 or 9 when we put the door in and she used it right away. My DH put ours in the wall. It has two flaps to keep the heat, cold, bugs, etc. out. It is close to the floor so it is easy to train the dogs and puppies to use it, and I have a special deck and ramp just for them. I also have a covered 12x20' fence and the fenced in yard for them. They don't like the rain, even with the cover, so I lock them outside for a few minutes in the morning and afternoon if it is raining, they don't get wet and I have less mess to clean. I don't remember the name of the company that makes the doors for the wall, but to me it was well worth it to have it.

A woman said she got this because she was tired of finding squirrels, rabbits, and one time a skunk

in her house when she had the regular dog door. This one opens only to your pet with a remote thingy on his harness.
I don't have one because I would not want Prince to go out without me or his daddy...we have had hawks, snakes and coyotes in our subdivision before!!

We have one in the sliding glass door in the dining room, it leads to the bar (which is not airconditioned year round) then there's one in the bar leading to the backyard. The backyard is surrounded by a 6 foot high privacy fence. All five of mine use it they range from 3lbs to 14.2 lbs. The door opening measures 5 in by 7 in. The only problem they have is getting by the guard dog
