| Need help/suggestions on potty training... I have a 2 year old that I trained using the crate training method, which worked pretty well for her. She never uses the bathroom in the house as I take her out in the morning before I leave for work which is about 8 a.m. I let her out at lunch at 11,and before I go back at 12. Then I get home at 5 p.m. and let her out again, then she goes back out at about 7 or so. Then shes in for the night. We never have any problems, although when she was younger, still a puppy she would from time to time,go in the house. I got a new little pup last week, and she is using it EVERYWHERE in the house! I let her out at the same times as I let Zoey but she is only about 7 1/2 weeks old. I have started using the pee-pads,but so far no luck. What are your suggestions on how to train her?

| A few questions/notes... Are you crating the new pup? Are you catching her in the act? How do you react? The pup can't "hold-it" as long as an older dog. A pup that young doesn't "know" it needs to poop!, until it is doing it! As soon as her eyes open, after a sleep, walk her straight to her potty spot, keep her there until the mission is accomplished. Then have a party for her! Treats, loves, snuggles... Then have a play, fast and furious, if she slows down, potty her again! Try not to have accidents, and have lots of party's! Good luck!

| the puppy is waaaaayy too young to have free roam of the house. When crate training one that young, when he is out of the crate, you should be either playing with him or holding him. He would have learned a great deal from his mother if he had been left with her for another month. You will need to keep him confined when heis not being held. |

| yorkiejunkie- No I am not crating her. I just got her last week and have began using the pee pad technique. I am searching of what the best way is before I start. jeaniek-I am not crating her,I said I crate trained my other one,and was asking how I should train this one. And she doesnt roam free, she stays in the den while I am at work, which is 8-5 then 12-5.

| Unfortunately P-Pads do not really do as they claim, attract the puppy! The crate, or very small confined area while you are not actively watching her, is the best method, in my opinion! When there is an accident, in the small space clean it up very well, with an enzyme cleaner. Crate training can make lots of things easier, in the future, if you are traveling, or whatever...Besides, just think of it as their "dog-house" in the house! It doesn't bother most dogs, so don't let it bother you.

| When a puppy has as much room to roam around in as a den, then she/he will need to go much more frequent then once every 3-4 hours. A puppy at 7 1/2 weeks, will need to go every hour on the hour or 1/2 hour. That is why crate training works. If you crate the 7 1/2 wk old in a crate that has been made to box in most of the space in the crate and to only allow the puppy to stand, turn around and lay down again, she/he will learn to hold it. Whether you paper train or train to go outside, crate training is still necessary. just because you are doing it on paper, does not mean they will automatically know to go on the paper when you are not there. If you crate them, then you can direct them to the paper for potty, at the appropriate times, (just like you directed your first one to go outside. the process is exactly the same. Outside or inside potty, you are teaching them the same thing: appropriate place to go.) keep them out for a while and back in the crate and the whole routine starts over again. I would put a "fence" (you can use anything to make your fence) the purpose is to enclose the potty area, and put more than one paper in the "potty area". Just like you brought the 1st one outside, you will bring the 2nd one to the "potty area". You will leave her in there until she goes, and make a big to do about it. At some point in the future, you can carve out a doorway in the potty area so that she will go in and out of it herself. I would make sure that you put the "potty area" in the place you want it for long term. Your puppy should have it down 100% before you start moving it. So this could take months. That's my suggestion.
