| Pippin ran out the gate I had taken Pippin, and Marley out in the back yard. I opened the side gate to go into the front yard, and Pippin flew past me and ran around the garage. I think he thought my daughter was home. He looked around for a second, and took off again across a pretty busy street. I was running as fast as I could, but you know how fast a yorkie is. It was like watching a nightmare in slow motion. I kept yelling for him, and he didn't even look back. I was so afraid a car was coming. He ran over to where a man was standing by his car, and I caught up with him. It's been about 15 minutes and I'm still shaking. I feel sick to my stomach. My last dog (a lab) was a runner. If someone (usually company) didn't close the door all the way he would open it with his paw and take off. I have purposely taught my boys to sit and wait when I open the door. They have never tried to run out. I can't believe in that one second I could have lost the most precious thing in my life. Pippin's trainer told me of a woman who took her dog for day care. When the lady would get home at night, she would pull into the garage, and let him out of the car (without his leash) and they would go into the house. This was their routine for 3 years. About 4 months ago when she let him out of the car he saw a cat, and took off across the street, and was hit and killed. That's what I was thinking about as I was chasing Pippin. I just learned a lesson. I've had Pippin 2 years, and he's never, ever tried to run out the door. I was so lucky today, but from now on I will never assume he's going to stay and not bolt out the door. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am so glad you had a happy ending. How scary. It is amazing how fast they can run and how for some reason they just decide to keep going. Take a deep breath and try and relax.

| I would have never thought he would do that. He didn't just try to follow me, he bolted out ahead of me. I keep telling him how mad I am at him, as I'm hugging him to death. I hope my lesson will prevent someone from making the same mistake I did. He always comes when I call, but we'd never been outside of an inclosed area without being on a leash. |

| consider yourself very lucky. my little Chiara did just that a couple of weeks ago. it was a quiet street with only one car coming... we ran, waved, screamed and yelled. Chiara got angry at the car and decided to attack it for some strange reason. my little angel is gone now. I miss her with every breath I take ...words can't describe. The driver (she lives two doors down the street) had her windows down, heard the screams but didn't stop until it was too late. she admitted that: she heard our screams to stop, she wasn't looking at the road for at least 10 seconds, she knew we had a small dog besides a bigger sheltie, but she decided all was safe and continued driving....

| Linda I'm sitting here with tears running down my face because I feel your pain. In those long minutes I was chasing him I felt what you must have been feeling when you were chasing Chiara. I am so sorry for your loss. |

| Thank you. going through the stages right now....sadness, guilt, anger, sadness. In the past few months I have become paranoid about this happening. I triple checked when leaving the house and coming back that Chiara was inside. I was afraid that she was going to slip out, hide in the garage and we wouldn't notice her pulling in/out, or that she would run out to the street. I drove everyone crazy. When guests came by I was borderline rude, reiterating the importance of closed doors at all times... It didn't help. The neighbor...she almost had a heart attack when she got out of the car. Somehow I still don't feel bad for her, she killed my most precious Chiara. She could have killed a human child and would be in jail now. She - as a driver, mother, and pet owner failed 100%. We have an African Grey Parrot that calls out her name, and barks like her.
