| I may have to put Karlee up for adoption to a good home.... Hello everyone, I know its been a while since I've been on to post lately. I'm facing a major crisis and may have to put Karlee up for adoption to someone that would love and care for our sweet baby girl. Karlee is our 5 1/2 month old furbaby that we love dearly. I am facing a major issue though...my oldest son who has had a lot of allergies now is having issues with hives and major hive breakouts to the point I am getting phone calls from school and he is having to have medical attention at school to be treated for these hive outbreaks. Then this week I had a MAJOR allegic reaction and my whole body broke out in hives and my throat started swelling together. The doctors told us not always is a Yorkie a safe bet to get away from allergy's and that it very well may be our little Karlee that's causing our outbreaks so bad. Its very, very scary to be in this situation it really is a life or death situation when your throat swells together. I'm so worried about my oldest son too he is really going through it bad too. My youngest son has not had any issues or my husband. We have talked about it and if we can't resolve the hives outbreaks we have no other choice but to put Karlee up for adoption. My son is going back to his allergy specialist next week to find out if there is any other options we can do and if it really is Karlee causing him to break out. I am on allergy med's for hives and I am breaking out worse than I've ever broke out before. Our doctor said sometimes it could be the food they are using, maybe Karlee had a fleas that got on us? Karlee has been treated for fleas though. We don't know but if we can't stop the outbreaks and it indeed is our sweet baby girl we will have to put her up for adoption...I'm heartbroken If we do have to put her up for adoption we live in the KY area, if anyone is around this area that is looking to own a sweet Yorkie girl, I would have to know who ever might want to adopt her that they will love Karlee and be the best Momma or Daddy to her as possible. Karlee is such a sweet loving dog. She is well mannered, housebroken to potty pads, she loves to cuddle, loves to play, sleeps good and is crate trained to sleep at night. She does'nt bother much (just watch out for paper towels or any toliet paper LOL) but she is so sweet and laid back. She loves her toys and will bring her squeaky bone up and jump on the couch and set her toy beside me and she will jump back down off the couch she waits for me to throw her bone so she can go fetch it. She gets the afternoon zoomies and runs around jumping and playing. She is just a joy to be around. Right now she is laying on my feet here on the couch while I'm on the computer. She loves to be cuddled and loves to be talked to. She is a sweet puppy. She definatly is gonna be a teapot, she loves to eat!! She's starting to get her silver hair on her top of her head and some silver mixed in on her back. Her hair is starting to really grow too. She loves a bath. She loves to be around kids. I have not made up my mind for sure if we can we will keep her and do what we can to keep her, but if I do have to put her up for adoption I wanted to have in mind who I might put her up for adoption too. If she goes up for adoption $300+ would include all her toys, puppy bed, crate, blanket, puppy food, brush, leash, and outfits would go along with where she went so she still has what she is used to around her. If anyone has dealth with allergies like us and could help us with a soultion I would greatly appreciate it! I will do what I all possibly can before I decide on giving Karlee up to a new home because Karlee is like our baby and our kids love her dearly too it would be so hard on all of us to have to have her go to another home Thanks all of you for taking time to read this and if anyone knows of anything we could do or has been through this situation any advise would be appreciated...if we have to put her up for adoption feel free to email me. Thanks

| I am so sorry that you are going through this. Hope that the tests will show that something else has changed in your household rather than it being Karlee. If worse comes to worse, I pray that you will be able to find a loving home for your little sweetheart. Hugs, Joanne

| I fortunately have not dealt with allergies to dogs, although I and my oldest daughter do have allergies. I am allergic to cats though. I am so sorry you are going through this. It would be a horrible situation to be in. From my experiences with mine and my daughter's allergies, sometimes doctors are not really positive of what causes hive breakouts. Prior to rehoming permanently, some things you might look at; what do you use to bathe her? If you are using pet shampoo, you might try bathing her with your shampoo for a while, (don't bathe her as often as human shampoo has a different ph and can dry out the skin, but if you don't have an issue with the shampoo you use right now, chances are you wouldn't have that issue when using it on her.) If the allergist thinks it could possibly be fleas, have her groomed prior to starting to use your shampoo and have the groomer really check well for fleas (I would go ahead and ask the groomer to use your shampoo at that time and explain why) If the allergist thinks it might be Karlee's diet, there are other options for feeding her (chicken, rice, vegetables) that are things you would normally eat and would not contain the preservatives that might be causing the reactions. As for the puppy pads, they could also be an issue, and I might try to start her going potty outside if the other suggestions do not seem to alleviate the issues. You said she was treated for fleas.....if you are treating her with a topical product, those work by secreting the medication through the oil glands, this could also cause an issue, so I might stop using it If you are in an area where it gets cool in the fall and winter it would be a good time to try this out anyway. If all of these suggestions do not seem to alleviate the symptoms, I would see if I could find someone to temporarily foster her. This would give you time to clean the house thouroughly and see if all symptoms subside. If they do, and all of the above issues did not help, then you may have no other choice, but I would try all of these first. I wish you all the best of luck! Michelle

| I am so sorry... I really hope you find out that something else in your home is the cause of your reactions

| Thank ALL of you for being so kind hearted and helping me through this. I will definatly try everything I can first, it very well may be something just real minor that has caused our hive outbreaks. I can sleep better tonight just knowing there is other options to try first. I appreciate all of you here on Yorkie talk its been a blessing to have found this site before we adopted our sweet Karlee I learned so many tips that I would not have ever known. Karlee sure is a sweet little gal she in my lap right now looking at me like what are you doing Mommy?! Thanks for all the advice and I'll try everything I can keep us in prayers that we can pinpoint the issue to resolve in our home to keep us from having to rehome Karlee. Love & Prayers to all of you!

| I am like this with most other dogs( hives, throat swelling shut) but not my yorkie and yorkie/chi mix. Have you had damp weather lately? I reacted like that to mold as well. I thought, what in the world??? I am not supposed to be wheezing, tight chest, bloodshot eyes when its raining... but it was a reaction to the mold spores in the air being released from all the rain and then the moisture/ humidity just made it worse.

Well not sure It could very well have something to do with our weather, lately its been cool one min and hot the next so that never helps our allergies. I have suffered from acute hives for 7 yrs now and only had throat swelling after surgery from allergic reaction to medicine and it scares me so badly when I do this. I get so scared I can't sleep for several days later in fear of my throat swelling together. It worries me even more now that my son is now having issues with hives so bad. My son has been allergy tested and he tested positive to 97% for allergies a real high case but he actually has started to outgrow some things like asthma and his allergies were showing mild but just in the last month he's really starting to have a lot of itching and I have gotten a lot worse it was around the time we got Karlee. After reading a lot of comments though it could very well be something we are using with Karlee that could be causing it. I'm gonna try everything possible and see if I can pinpoint the trigger of our allergies. I had always heard too that Yorkie's were a type of dog that even people that suffered the worst allergies could have, that is the reason we first started looking into having a yorkie, now of course its much more than that they are just so darn cute, smart, loving, caring wonderful pets! Thanks for letting me know about your allergies that may be what it is here too there is so many things that can trigger allergies and drs sometimes go the easiest route by asking about a housepet and pinpoint it to that I think. I am betting its more to do with something we use like her food even could be causing a allergy to us.

| I know how horrible allergies can be. I had chronic bronchitis for three years before an allergist finally stumbled on the fact that it was a milk allergy. Odd thing about it is.. I can do yogurt and cheese, just not milk or ice cream. That one really got the allergist. LOL and MOLD will send me into a sinus infection and bronchitis so fast your head will spin. My throat starts hurting and I loose my voice within a few min. of being exposed to mold. It is a miserable feeling when you don't know what is causing the allergy or how to treat it. I will definately keep you in my thoughts, please keep us updated on how you are both doing.

| I am so very sorry that you are going through this. I'm sorry I can't offer advise as I have not had this experience. I hope you find it is something other than Karlee. You sound like a wonderful yorkie mommy. I will keep you, your family and Karlee in my prayers.

| Sorry to hear the news I'm in Kentucky too. What part are you in~? I've always heard that Yorkshire Terriers are hypoallergic. Whether it is true, I don't know. I do know that it may not be the dog and even tho the Doctor is suggesting that it is. If your not orignally from Kentucky as I am, that everyone whom has never suffered from allergies will if they live in Kentucky. For some reason, everyone whom I have spoke to whom has moved here has told me that they never had allergies and now they have to take meds or shots. I would check into this further before getting rid of the dog. It could be that your child has an allergy to a food, and a lot of folks do. He could be allergic to wheat or gluten, for example. Check the health food stores and talk to them about your issues and they have books and other sources to look up for you. Trying to live without wheat for instance, if that is the issue isn't a problem. They have all sorts of wheat-free products in the health food stores or whatever your allergy is, to combat your problem. Good Luck and keep us posted. |
