| A Yorkies Tail Just wondering if anyone knew why some yorkies have tails that stand way up and some that are mostly down?

| Hi. Well not sure on the answer to this one..but my Dusties tail stands way up and over his back..and now it is looking like a long curly Fan...very effective...and it stands straight up when he is startled...or angry... All our other yorkies had docked tails..so Dustie is quite amusing with his. He plays with it a lot too...that is fun to watch..He acts like it doesn't belong to him...aren't they just fun. But maybe someone will know. Chrisann x

| I wondered the same thing...Apple's tail never stands straight up, as I think they cut in a little too short...When she's happy, it's a little more up than straight out...It's the only thing about Apple I wish were different, but I don't love her any less ...I do think the tails that stand straight up are so attractive...Britster's doggy has a full, uncut, fluffy tail, and I think it looks marvelous...I wish they wouldn't crop the tails, at all, but that's the standard way, and I don't have a say in it lol... |

| Twinkle and Wicket don't have docked tails and they mostly carry them up....they look like pretty feathers If I see one of them looking guilty, with their tail carried low, I can pretty much guarantee that I'm going to find a little puddle or poop where there shouldn't be one! So I guess whether docked or full, their tail is an indication of their mood xxx xxx

| I wish they would stop docking tails too. One day I hope to get a yorkie with a full tail (don't tell DH) lol. All four of my furbabies have docked tails and three of them have their tails down mostly but my little guy always has his tail sailing high in the air. It is the cutest little thing.

YT 500 Club Member | Alfie carries his tail high, and loosly over his back but when something peques his interest it goes tight over his back almost lying flat like on a maltese, very attractive. Rosie tends to carry hers straight up like a flagpole. |

| Hmmm...not sure, but I would guess it would be a genetic issue. There is a specific tail set as described for the standard, but that generally only applies to the tail after it is docked. I would think that the difference in Yorkies that still have their tails intact would be because there has been no long term focus on trying to create one certain "type" for it, since usually, it's not there. (Did that make sense?) |

| I'm not sure what length the tail is supposed to be docked, but I think my Abby's was docked a little short. The standard says medium length, but how many inches is that? Her tail is very short, but she is only 5 months old so it may grow some more. My groomer said if I showed her she would have to wear a false tail, but since I won't be showing her it doesn't matter anyway. Are those beautiful tails we see on the dog shows on TV false? |

The 3 Musketeers Donating Member | My Misty has a docked tail which is about an inch and a half. Normally when she's wandering around the house her tail is straight up. If her tail is down she's either scared or did something wrong.

| Bailey's tail ( what's left of it!) is up most of the time..I wish he had a full tail too, hopefully the practice of docking will eventually become obsolete.

| Kiki has a docked tail. She is 8.5 mths old and just started holding her tail up when she walks around. Before she walked around with it in the down position unless she was barking at something. For her it came with age.

| My oldest as her full tail. My middle and youngest both have docked tails. It just depends on if the breeder has them docked or not. IF you really want a baby with a full tail, make sure you speak to the breeder before they are docked (they do this when they are VERY young). Now, if you are talking about a docked tail and the way it is positioned, I think that has to do with heredity. With all dogs, if they are scared, worried, upset, they will tuck and if they are excited it raises and wags. Now on to the ears... My oldest and youngest both lay their ears down when I talk to them, love on them, take a picture etc. I don't think I have many pictures at all with their ears up LOL BUT my boy RARELY puts his ears down! He is just too proud to lay his ears back or tuck that tail! There have been few occasions when I was giving him love that he actually allowed his ears to lay down.

| Docking tails is illegal here in Iceland, every Yorkie here has full lengt tail except most of yorkies that are moved in to the country I think its cruel to dock theyr tails, i would NEVER do it to my Yorkie! Fido's tail is high up, like jacksons !
