YIKES - Overnight Hospital Stay??? - YorkieTalk.com Forums

OK, the time has come for little Chewy to get his berries snipped! I have been calling around and in NYC and it is quite expensive - about $300!!! I called the Human Society and with a Friends of Animals certificate, they will do it for FREE. The only thing is that he might have to stay overnight. I asked if they made exceptions and the receptionist told me to talk to the doctor when I go for my appt. I'm not sure how I feel about this, the poor little guy is going to be butchered and instead of coming home to me, he gets put into a cage. Then again, if there are usually any types of complications from this, maybe he should be there.

I really need to hear anyone's thoughts on this because i am going crazy!

Gerry I wouldn't push TOO hard on him coming home right away. Though I'm sure he'll be fine...if they want to keep him overnight, just let them...it might even be better for him, because he will be sleeping the whole time anyway. I would definetely try to bring him home, but I wouldn't ditch the effort if they really want to keep him overnight. They just want to get up and play when they see you and they are supposed to sleep. I would say try to take him home but find out why they insist.

Nobella: I knew I could count on you! Everyone seems to want to keep these little peanuts overnight. They all say that it is better for them to just rest. The only thing about this place is that it isn't a 24 hour facility so there will be time when no one is there. They say it's done all the time and they have experience with yorkies...I'm just so torn.

I would ask the vet why is their policy to keep the pup overnite. I guess he will be fine at the vets. Good luck and please keep us posted.

I have some info for low or free spay/ neutering in NYC. If you want the info PM. I got this info from the ASPCA. Im going to spay Gucci next month for free in the ASPCA mobile van.

I would tell them that though you really trust their work, you would prefer that you take him home when they close, so that you could keep an eye on him. What's the point of him staying there if no one will be around?? Just tell them you would prefer is someone was with him the whole time and if they can't do it..you will.

Good luck to little Chewy he will do great...when is the big day?

Oh I agreed with Nobella, why keep him overnite if there will be noone to watch him.

I'm glad everyone is saying go get him - you could make sure you are the last one there at night and bring that baby home - if no one is there - then it's just SILLY to keep him overnight.... and that would make me NUTS !

when my Vet told me she wanted to Keep Desi overnight, I asked if there was going to be someone there 24/7 - she said no. I then told her I wanted to take her home and I did. I asked her why would keep her overnight if no one would be monitoring her. She says its because they should really be still the day after surgery and the only way to insure that is to keep them confined. But, I couldn't stand the thought of leaving her there if there was no medical reason for it. I kept her in her crate all day and just let her out to use the poo pad or to put her on my lap. It was much better than leaving her in a strange place all night.

Right, V. I have no problem waiting or coming back later, even if it is late in the evening.

I also have a crate for Chewy and I don't mind locking him up in that to rest, just as long as he's not there alone! If I can't bring him home I will just go to my regular vet and pay for it.

If there is going to be someone there with him to monitor him 24 hrs then I wouldn't worry about it too much even though I know you will miss him but, if there's not I would as why I couldn't bring him home.

Mollie had to stay 2 nights, of course her's wasn't just a normal spay. But, where I take her to there is someone there 24hrs. It was still hard.
