Best way to designate new puppies

I have tried hair ties, bracelets, ribbons, embroidery thread braided. Nail polish would not stay on the tiny nails.

What has worked for you to indicate who is who when your pups were whelped? I"m always afraid of anything tight on their little necks or string tends to fray and then their paws shread the makeshift collars into strings that entangle their little bodies. If you weren't keeping a close eye on them it would cause a serious problem.

Thanks for that link!! I was trying to figure out what we could do for our future litter of Australian Shepherds. With those puppies though, there will be different colors so it may not be as difficult as say Yorkies that all look alike as newborns but I still wanted some kind of identification bands.

Since you've used these (and I'm assuming probably for Yorkies), do they come in different lengths? Do you tell her what breed of puppy you need them for?

Thanks! I might use those if I have another litter. I used yarn, but it has to be changed every couple of days due to their little claws separating it, it gets all fuzzy. I also used soft baby velcro strips that I cut in 1/4 inch collars. Those seemed to work great until one day, I just happened to decide one more check on the pups was necessary before I headed out the door. Thank God I did cause one had gotten her bottom jaw under the collar. The collar was like a bit in her mouth! She could have been stuck like that for a couple of hours! That was the day I took them off and decided no more bands of any kind. I figured they were all about the same size and I would continue to weigh them but not worry which was which unless someone obviously lost weight or failed to gain.
