Should Choco go traveling?

so for this summer i am going to japan for about 3 months and my mom wanted to see Choco....
the flight is about 18 hours in total, and choco is only 1 year old...
i am going to fly on delta and i believe delta have pets small enough can travel in the cabin and not with the luggage underneath....
but when i get to japan, apparently they have to go through tests and examinations so that they know that choco is not carrying any disease... and that might take a while... and he would have to go through the same process on the way back... my mom told me it might take a week for him to finish....

i am not really sure about the details yet, and i really dont know how long itll take for them to check choco on the way and back...

have anyone taken their furry babies out of the country?
any experience?
should i take choco to japan?

I know Michiko just went home to Japan and had to keep Haruka here with me and then her BF. There is soe sort of rabies test and if I remember correctly it has to be done 6 months prior to traveling to Japan. Hopefully Michiko will see this and can tell you more of what she knows.

Who will take care of Choco if she doesn't go with you to Japan? If she's with someone that you know will take good care of her it might be better than the stress of travel.

When I traveled to Japan (without any pets) the travel.state.gov website had a lot of good info.

This is what it says about pets:

"Pets: The Japanese Animal Quarantine Service (AQS) http://www.maff.go.jp/aqs/english/index.html sets procedures for importing pets. In most instances, the process will take at least seven (7) months from the date of the first rabies vaccination before a pet may enter Japan, so advance planning is critical. More information about importing a pet into Japan is available at http://japan.usembassy.gov/e/acs/tacs-petsi.html. More information about exporting a pet from Japan is available at http://japan.usembassy.gov/e/acs/tacs-petse.html."

Oh my goodness, ive just read the quarantine rules for Japan (on previous message) it does seem that it may take a while once you actually arrive. I have a pet passport for Poppy which involved rabies shots and a 6 month wait before we were allowed to take her out of the country. We took her on a family holiday to Menorca (Spain) It will probably be the first and last time we actually do it. It seemed very stressfull for her, although the flight was only 2 and a half hours long ,the wait at the other end for all the paperwork and red tape was very stressful for us and her.We also had to hire a specialist animal import and export company to deal with the paperwork.She had to visit a vet 24 hours before our return for a healthcheck and a tick and tapeworm treatment Not to mention that we had to do it all again in reverse with animal export company on our return to the uk. Although I do keep her passport up to date with her yearly rabies shots my partner and I both have agreed to take british holidays that are majorly stress free in comparrison with her instead.

Please don't put your baby through that 18 hour flight ! You may understand what's going on, but your baby doesn't...And you also have to drop her off at the cargo building 2 hours before the flight (and hope it leaves on time) and you have to pick her up at the agriculture building in the airport in Japan (and hope it's immediate) but it's not, because they have to check all paper work ...So now, the 18 hours are at least 21 hours (alone) and I'm not sure, but the cabin where she is might not have lights on either.
I would leave her with someone who can take her for walks and play with her and love her til her mommy gets home !
It's no fun for animals when they have to travel !!!!
I sent my daughter's 2 yorkies to Hawaii and had to go through the same process, I cried when I left them looking at me from different crates with strangers...I'd never, ever do it again !!!
Please think twice before you make up your mind...

I couldn't take her to Japan... There is a quarantine process that you have to go through. There are blood samples that you have to ask vet to do and send it to particular center... I believe it was in Kansas... This is the link with all the info.

We are miltary and live in Japan..

I did not bring a pet over when we came here 4 years ago,as I bought Bella just 2 months ago, but many friends have and it is a very long process to bring them here, and it is very expensive for all the shots and tests that they need before coming here.

We are going on vacation back to the states the summer for a month, and I was thinking I was going to be able to take Bella with me, but I cant. It's easy to take them to the states, just a health check 10 days prior to leaving and up to date on shots, but was told by the vet I wouldnt be able to bring her back into the country....

Now that I think about it, I wouldnt want to put her through the 13 hour flight...its tough on us, let alone being caged up with no food,water and no potty breaks for 13 hours.
