| New Yorkie Owners! And, I'm allergic :( - help! Hi all! My name is Joshua, and my wife and I are brand new Yorkie owners! () We just got our pup Luna last night, and she is 2 months old and soooo adorable! She runs around the house all playful and hasn't gotten into any trouble so far - seems to just like being around us! However! I have always had asthma & really bad allergies to animals in general (birds, cats, dogs) and thought that since Yorkies are more hypo-allergenic than other pets, there would be a better chance I wouldn't react to Luna. Unfortunately, this isn't the case! While my asthma is fine with her, my eyes & nose seem to get pretty stuffed up and watery when I'm around her...Which is super sad, because I love playing with her! I know there's a lot of fairly generic tips on "how to prevent pet allergies" like getting a good allergy air filter, washing the pet appropriately often, not letting it be in the bedroom/etc... but I was wondering if there were any more specific tips for being around Yorkies.... if you/someone you know has allergies to Yorkies, what's the best way you know of to either get rid of the allergy..or minimize its symptoms altogether? We really really want to keep our little Luna! Thanks so much in advance! -J |

| Hi ! Welcome My daughter (17) also has allergies and asthma. She has been fine with my babies. First 1, then 2, then 3 babies. Maybe whatever is bothering you is on her from where she came from. Did she come with blankets, or toys? I would wash them. That might help. Maybe a little bath for her would help. Just make sure she is really warm after. I put my babies drying towel in the microwave so it's warm. Sometimes my daughters eyes bother her when she plays with them. She just makes sure she washes her hands afterward. It mainly happens when my babies need baths. I hope this helps. CONGRATULATIONS on your little baby Good Luck !! COCO PEBBLES TRIXIE |

| Hi and welcome to YT:wavey my hubby is allergic to alot of things dogs included but the yorkies thank goodness have never bothered him!!!!!!!! But he uses a dr prescribed inhaler which probably helps. Good luck to you, maybe it won't be as bad as the pup gets older. Mine did shed their puppy hair even tho they are a non shedding breed. I'm sorry it's not an inhaler it's a nose spray. Maybe you could ask your dr. |

| Welcome! I'm sorry you are having a reaction. I am hoping it's maybe your pup's shampoo or something and not the puppy herself. There is something that people can do to eliminate some allergies. It works for some things, but not for others. All I can do is suggest that you look into it. If you find a practitioner in your area, call him/her and ask a lot of questions. It is called NAET (Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique). It involves accupuncture, but it is non-invasive. You would need to bring in a few pieces of your dog's hair. It could work with one treatment, or it might take two or three. If you find a practitioner who feels he/she can treat you, it might be worth a shot. The most you would lose is your time and a little money (unless insurance covers it). What you could gain, though, is a happy life with your dog. If you are not into holistic/alternative treatments, though, then this may not be for you. You can go to NAET - Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Techniques are alternative allergy medications used to reduce or eliminate allergy and disease to read a little more about it, and look for a practitioner in your area. Good luck! |

| I have asthma and severe allergies. When I first got my boy Buttons I had a hard time breathing. I made sure to wash everything he came home with. I was his bedding and bathe him weekly. I haven't had any problems since and its been 3 years. I know that when I take him for a walk in this cold weather my asthma really kicks in but, its from the cold not him. Good luck.

| My Daughter has major allergies also. She has a yorkie too and found out she can't handle the purfumes in the doggy shampoos. So she uses Johnsons baby shampoo and she is good to go. |

| I have asthma and allergies and when I got my first Yorkie 4 years ago, I had a severe allergic reaction. It turned out the I was allergic to an ingredient in the dog food (Pedigree) which she was eating before and after she came to live with us. Once my doctor figured it out and we changed her to a new dog food (it took several days) the allergic reaction I was having went away. |

| Did you give her a bath yet? If not I would do that immediately. Find a mild shampoo you are not allergic to (I like Buddy Wash, no chemicals) and use that. You can use human shampoo today if you need to but then find a dog shampoo for weekly baths or it will dry out her skin too much. I am allergic to most dogs, cats, birds, etc etc etc. and Sammy and Loki sleep with me and I'm fine. I can stick my face in their fur and I'm OK both asthma and allergy wise and I could NEVER do that with another dog - even another Yorkie - because not everyone is like me about weekly baths and such. Sometimes they only make it 6 days I'm not a freak about wiping their paws when they come inside and that sort of thing because I would spend my life wiping paws, but like Sam went to the vet Tuesday and I had to give her a bath right away (and wash all of my clothes and coat) because I was sneezing. Seriously, I promise it will help. Wash all of her bedding and blankets and everything she touched before and give her a good bath (or two) The lady who had Sammy before me used a perfume spray on her and I was terrified I was allergic to her and after a bath or two with Buddy Wash I was fine. Good luck!!!

| I have allergies to cats and rabbits, I guess anything that sheds as well as just about anything else found in nature , Though I'm not allergic to my Yorkies, if you have medical insurance and don't mind taking a pill daily, you can look into Allegra-D. That takes care of my allergy problems, unfortunately it's ridiculously expensive if you don't have the insurance coverage.

Senior Yorkie Talker | Welcome to the yorkie forum.... I to have asthma and allergies, I have no problems with my 4 yorkies. I think it helps to keep them clean. Maybe what you are having a reaction to his the stuff they bring in from the outside. I try to give mine a bath once a week. |
