| Question about APR My puppy has papers that came from APR (America's Pet Registry). Is this a valid registry? What do you know about them? Thanks. |

| America's Pet Registry is one of the "alternative" registries formed when the AKC adopted stricter rules and started requiring DNA testing. This registry was actually created by the retail pet industry so I assume your puppy came from a pet store. You can read how it's mission is to product the pet industry on its website: America's Pet Registry - FAQs Unfortunately, papers from this and other alternative registries don't mean anything. It just allows the pet stores to state that the puppies have "papers" so they can sell them for high prices. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | One of the problems with the alternative registries is that they do not allow limited registration. AKC has that option for breeders, and the best breeders sell with limited registration, meaning that should the buyer decide to become a breeder, the offspring will not be eligible to be registered with the AKC, a good breeder cares about the offspring, and realizes that there is more into breeding healthy dogs then just throwing two dogs together. The other registries, on the other hand, do not ever have this feature, and any dog purchased through them has breeding rights. Of course, this is the worse thing that could happen, because in all probability, fewer of them, if any, should be bred. Until people realize that breeding dogs is a science and an art, and not just a "hobby" or a way to make a few extra bucks, the breed overall will suffer. APR does not have that option, so whoever buys one of the dogs registered with them can become a breeder, and unfortunately, many do. Not to say that they don't make perfectly fine pets, but only the healthiest and the best examples of the breed should be bred.

Oh thanks, some people get so upset when you try to educate, and others like yourself are so gracious about learning. I knew so little when I found YorkieTalk, and I'm so grateful for the people who have made it what it is. It such a great resource. I bought the little children's pj's at Target; they are newborn size, and I just shrunk the heck out of them and sewed the sides up an inch or so, and made a place for his tail. It seems like it would be pretty easy to make doggie PJ's out of them, you know where the front is bare too, but I wanted them mainly for a Christmas card photo. So much cheaper than dog's pj's, and so much more variety.

APRI is a good registry that requires at least a 3 generation pedigree to register your dog and most of the dogs registered with them are dualed with AKC as well. They were formed way before DNA was a requirement from AKC as someone stated.

They use to be the same, and they split apart for some reason, but I think both are used to mislead consumers. Here's a link that explains some of the differences in registries. Registries

They never were the same they did both use the same letters way back when thats why they added the I and made it APRI so they would not confuse them with the other registry. I believe since then they have acquired the registry but they keep them very separate.

It was founded by the retailers of pets, how strict do you think it's going to be? Many commercial breeders have had to leave AKC for various reasons, including poor kennel conditions, and forging documents, so these alternative registries pop up. Do you think APRI does kennel inspections? I'm not saying dogs registered with them are bad, but you should know you are supporting the commercial pet industry when you purchases a dog registered with them. I would rather have no papers than one from a poor registry. I would like puppy mills to go out of business. Quote:
