| should i have my yorkie spayed or not? i have a 7 month old yorkie who just currently started her first heat cycle. i am debating on whether i want to get her spayed or not. i've spent awhile reading different things online, and have found many disadvantages and advantages, so i don't know what to do. i wouldn't mind for her to have maybe one litter of puppies, but i'm also nervous that she'll have some complications. any suggestions? |

| Spay her!! I had oliver fixed and brooklyn spayed! I wouldnt want to deal with having a liter of puppies not knowing anything about breeding dogs. Besides the fact of knowing that i would never want to deal with finding good homes for them. I would be wanting to keep them all!! Most of all i would be afraid of something happening to my baby girl. If i were you i would spay her and just love her!!!:d

| My suggestion is to spay her. However, if you decide to breed her, don't until her 2nd Heat or 18 months of age. But, most importantly, if you haven't started already, study everything there is to learn on breeding yorkies, make sure you know her pedigree; inside and out. Have her ears, eyes tested, heart checked, hips and legs x-rayed, bile acid tested and make sure she is free from any infections. Make sure the stud you pick out has all the appropriate tests too and make sure he compliments your girl. There's alot to learn.....Find yourself a mentor. Breeding is a big responsibility. Contact the Yorkshire Terrier Club of Oklahoma.....visit the YTCA.org website and you can get their contact information there. I know the people there very well, talk to them, I'm sure they'll give you some information and help.

| I would spay her. No muss no fuss. My little girl is 18 weeks old and I plan to spay her. If you don't have experience breeding yorkies you probably shouldn't do it. And besides all the dangers the pregnancy could bring, it could happen at any time and last for hours and hours...what if you aren't home or if it is not a good time? A litter of yorkie puppies is tempting because they are so cute, but I think the worry and stress of having them and taking care of them for 3 months after they are born is a lot of work and it has to be done right! Good luck whatever you decide! |

| I would have her spayed. The risk of cancer is so much lower if they are spayed. If you do breed her then, please take everyone else's advice and do your research. Captain Jack came to me from an "accidental" breeding from someone who didn't know anything about breeding. I got him at 7 weeks. He had never been wormed, was covered in fleas, had no vaccinations, and had coccidia. He is great now, but please do your research! Good luck with whatever you decide! Jessica

| i was leaning more towards getting her spayed, so i think that is what i will do. i'm just freaked out that something will go bad in surgery or something. i was at petsmart the other day and they had a bansfield hospital and they were doing a surgery and you could watch it from a big window, and it just broke my heart seeing that poor dog. i guess i just need to make sure i pick the best vet! thanks so much for the help! |

GOOD for you!!!! It is scary them going through surgery...but I think the risks of surgery are far LOWER than the possible complications of carrying and delivering a litter of pups!!! Plus she might change after she's had a litter.....I wouldn't want that for my baby!!! Just check around and find a vet near you that comes highly recommended!! Then you'll rest easy!!

| I am getting a little male soon Hi there everybody. I am getting a little male yorkie soon and I have a female yorkie that is about 1 years old. I haven't had her spayed yet and my male yorkie I am getting is 7 weeks old. Would he be able to get her pregnant at that age? Or do I have a bit of time to get her spade? ? |

| Before I got my first yorkie (25 years ago)I thought it would be fun to breed her. I did some research & learned how complicated it is to do it the safe & "right" way. Here I am 25 years later, and I say SPAY HER! I love my baby way too much to ever risk her life. I would never breed a dog. It takes WAY more knowledge & resources than I have to do it the right way.

Be very, very careful where you take her to be spayed. I'm speaking from experience here. I also have a female Maltese that I got from a breeder, because she had to have C-sections. I took her to be spayed, and the vet cut through her scar and stitched it closed - and put on an abdominal binder. My gut told me there would be problems, but he insisted it was okay.....well....the next morning, I woke up, and she (my dog) had a funny look on her face...I unwrapped her abdominal binder and her incision had broken open and her insides were coming out! I WAS HOME ALONE. I called my vet to meet me, wrapped a clean towel around her belly, and took off. I only had my PJs on but I wasn't about to stop to dress, this was an emergency. I was terrified. This time, the dumb*** stapled her incision. Needless to say, I would NEVER allow him to do surgery on my dogs again (I only have 2). I buy heartworm Rx from him but that's all. Be very careful where you have your dog spayed.
