1st time here and need some advice???

I am so happy that I found this site!! I need your help!! We have an 8 month old Toy Yorkie name TRIBBLES!! He is truly my baby boy!! He is VERY, VERY active! Always running around and wanting to play constantly. Last week he slipped on our backyard deck (it was wet from the rain!) and let out this horrible YELP! Ofcourse we rushed him right to the VET immediately. After some looking over he determined that he has a TORN ACL in his BACK LEFT LEG. We are devastated!! The vet said that he needs a $4,000 surgery to repair it. I have done some research and a lot of what I read says that with little dogs they heal themselves quite well. We are watching him 24/7. He is in a baby playpen most of the time and usually my daughter or myself climb in with him to keep him company. My question is has anyone else had this problem and how did you fix it? How long did it take? He also seems to be getting depressed because he can't run around and be himself. Any suggestions or advice would be VERY, VERY much appreciated!!

Awww poor baby. Im so sorry that happened to the little guy. I've never had to experience that but im sure someone here on YT will be able to help you.

I think it will depend on the severity of the ACL injury as to whether or not surgery will be necessary. If it's a complete tear you may not have much choice. Is your vet wanting to give rest and rehab a chance to work?

I'd get a second opinion on the need for surgery and price. The second opinion might be worth the piece of mind knowing you are doing the right thing for Tribbles. Hope healing without surgery does the trick.

I don't think that I would question the vet too quickly. If you want a second opinion, get one. I don't think a torn ACL is anything to fool around with (and it may cause more problems as he gets older). I would consider the surgery..... and not postpone it too long. ($4000 sounds pretty high.... check with other vets on that, too)

I had a male back in the early 80's that tore his ALC, I got several opninions and one said I could wait and see, but when I took him to the specialist he said to do the surgery as he also needed his kneecap fixed. Back then it cost 7 or 9 hundred and he did fine. Even after the surgery he held that leg up when standing. Maybe a specialist can advise you as to how long you should wait t see if it will get better on it's own. When Zorro first did it he screamed but while waiting for 2nd opinion and specialist he did not appear to be in pain, but I worried about later in life. I know how difficult it is to find 4000 for surgery. Maybe you could find a vet that can do it for less?
