| Question about anesthesia and pre testing. Jo had a visit with a vet this morning to discuss his future neutering. The vet seemed nice and I let him tell me what he uses. He said they use a valium/ketocet (I think that was it) mix to intibate (using the smallest tube) and then the Isoflorane. (sp?) He also said afterwards he may have quite a bit of pain and gave me some reusable ice packs and said he would give him pain pills but I can't remember the name...I believe it started with an R though. Is there any pretesting that should be done and if so what and why? The vet didn't mention any and I forgot to ask. Jo only has 1 testicle dropped so his neuter will be a bit more involved so that's why he will be in more pain than usual...and Jo has a zero tolerance for pain so I'm almost expecting him to have a hard time. Oh, Jo only weighs 3.6 at 8 1/2 months old so he's still pretty tiny. Last edited by Jo-Jo; 08-15-2005 at 04:16 PM. |

| I don't think there is any pre testing that has to be done. Baxter was neutered and we didn't have any pretesting. You could tell he was pretty sore the next day when we picked him up-he was NOT himself. But soon he was back to normal. We didn't use any pain medication or anything.

| Thanks Kelley. I guess they have to go through the muscle wall when doing this type of neuter because they can't feel the second testicle so there is a bit more pain. I'm hoping he doesn't have anymore pain than a typical neuter would have but he screamed blue bloody murder when he got his shots so...... |

| Yes, there is pretesting Yes - I called a few vets (as I am thinking of switching) today to ask these questions. It is good that they are going to use the Isoflorane, but all the vets that I called, even the one I am at now, suggest doing a pre-surgical anesthesia test also. It determines whether or not they are allergic or can handle the Isoflorane as well as other chemicals or medicines that they will be using for the procedure. Around my area it's about $40 extra. But I think it would be wise to do this, especially since your little guy is only 3lbs. It might safe a lot of heart ache by learning the hard way. Please consider taking the test.

| Thank you. I totally forgot about the pre-testing while I was there and I'm sure I didn't ask all the questions I should have but I'll call them in the morning and see what they say. |
