| I am Just so darn discouraged!!! Cooper is almost 8 months old and has been neutered. But I still cannot get him potty trained. I have read every thread on here, AND I MEAN EVERY THREAD!!! That pertains to training. I know that Yorkies are a little slower to train than other dogs. BUT this is getting rediculus. We take him out every 2 hours and he refuses to pee or poop outside. He will come in and within 10 min. pee or poop or both in the house. Sometimes he does it by the door which makes me wonder if he is kinda getting it. BUT my house smells like a Kennel. I have severe Rheumatoid Arthritis and my DH is handicapped as well and we just can't clean our rugs every week. I am thinking of putting up the Xpen again. He is crated most of the time when we are not watching him but at this point we would like to have him around us more. My grown daughter is living here for a short time and will be leaving the end of the month. She is no support and always yells at me about "my dog" I know that consistancy is the key but when she leaves I am going to put his Xpen back up and pad train him again. IT was so much easier to just wash the floor inside the Xpen and not all the carpets. Do you think it is too late to go back to the pads since he isn't going outside 90% of the time anyway? I feel like such a failure. I have never had this trouble with a dog before. Please help me someone?

My Little Man! Donating Member | I am sorry you are dealing with frustration right now. Yes sometimes yorkies are hard to housebreak, but it takes a lot of patience. I will tell you what I did that helped me. 1. Take the wee wee pad that he already peed on and take it outside. Let him smell it and say go pee pee. Keep telling him to do so until he does. It might take a while. Dont go back home if he didnt do his business. Once he does praise him with his favorite treat and make a big deal about it, like oh yeah good boy etc. Once he peed on the wee wee pad he will know that its ok to pee outside. Then you dont need to use the pad just tell him go wee wee and praise when he does. 2. You have to take him every 2-4 hours at first. The consistency is the key. He will realize that once he goes outside you get all happy and he gets the treat. 3. Also watch when he eats and drinks. Usually when they eat they need to go potty in 1 hour or so. 4. People say dog's bladder starts working its muscles to hold when they are about 6 months of age. Hope it helps. Good luck!

| I had Koda on a leash constantly and made him stay with me at all times, it was hard but it did work for the most part- he still has accidents sometimes. you are right, nobody wants to have to clean all the rugs all the time! stick in there! he can get better, yorkies are so smart!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I'm sorry your having trouble, I think it's not that unusual for them to not be trained before 8 months, and many have a setbacks with neutering. I think you can go back to the pads. Washable pads worked better for Joey, he seemed to have an easier time with those. Do you think some of the peeing is due to marking? This is different than peeing, and it doesn't have anything to do with emptying the batter, but more to do with marking his territory. Most people like to get their dogs neutered before marking becomes too ingrained, and it usually takes a couple of months after surgery before hormone levels are low enough so that marking isn't such a problem. Many people use belly bands for this. Neutered dogs will still want to mark outside the house though. It's extremely important to clean up any urine spots with an enzyme cleaner such as Nature's Miracle, otherwise they will be tempted to go back to the old spot.

| I totally sympathize with you. We have four yorkies ranging from 2 as the oldest to 17 weeks as the youngest. We have never had a problem with the oldest until we added the other ones. Just tonight we discovered that he is the one that has been peeing on the throw rugs. We have been thinking all this time that it was one of the others. So now we don't know what to do. Why is he doing this? We don't know. And we don't really know what to do about it. Belly bands I guess:-( Hang in there. I'm going to - we have to.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | If you decide to continue with outside...when you take him out there...walk him around. Walking stimulates them to go which is probably why he comes by inside and goes. I would also suggest a potty phrase....walk him around and repeatedly say go potty (or whatever phrase)...when he goes, praise to high heaven and give him a treat. When mine first got it....going to the door was the first sign. Unfortunately like yours...if you didn't see them at the door...they went BY the door.

| Yes he is on a feeding schedule and when I take him out I say "go Pee" or Poo then when he does go I prais him. But half the time I forget the treats inside.... LOL Iknow that by then it is too late. But I have blocked off part of my house so he has less freedom and hopefully that will also help. Thanks for all your responses

| As an RH sufferer too I know the problems you have love. I trained Katie to use both, but it didn't click properly with her until she was 11 months old. Then she got the message. After that I removed the pee pads from the house one by one. Trouble is now having Suzi, and having more pads. Katie will use them as well so she doesn't have to go outside. I'm lucky though that I have laminate flooring. I bought some picnic mats from the £1 shop and have these down in my bedroom plus a couple of pee pads, cos they sleep with me. Just in case for Suzi. I do hope your little one soon gets the message love. Hugs Shirl x x

Also, are you taking him out enough? I forget how old he is but he probably needs to go out, first thing in the morning, then ever 2-4 hours, and last thing before bed. If you go outside and he doesn't go, WAIT. Potty training takes time. If he's going 10 minutes after you come back inside, he obviously has to go so you just have to be patient and persistent. The training is tough but it will pay off in the end.
