The heat cycle lasts 3 weeks My Jess was just in heat, and before Lady was spayed at 7 months old,she was in heat too.It gets VERY messy, especially if they like to lay on the bed,couch..etc. I had to keep giving mine butt baths because the smell of blood wasnt very nice the whole time After three weeks they stop bleeding, but they stay swollen (vulva, breasts) for another week or so.I hope Iv helped Last edited by Chelsie1978; 01-27-2005 at 04:00 AM.

Three pounds is small to be bred from what I've read. It could kill them, so I would be very careful and consult the vet. The breeders who are on here can give you a better idea of this. I know I would be afraid of breeding my 3 # Yorkie! She just seems too small. And what a baby she is anyway!

3 wks wow... what fun. lol Well so far the doggie diapers with the pad is doing great. no mess. mybirdys2003 before I breed her I will be x-raying her hips to see if she can carry babies at all, and if my vet says she's too small then I won't breed her.

You really can't go by the hip size.. 3 pounds is just too small.. Imagine if she has three puppies in there pushing on her insides... It can cut off major blood veins and cause a stroke or worse.... death.. She'll be too miserable to eat and could get hypogycemic. You most likely would have to have a c-section which is also hard on them... You could lose your baby. Add up all the weight of three pups plus placentas and you would probably total half her weight.. JMO

Vets are not the best judge for this. Only breed a 3 pound female if you are willing to lose her. It happens more often than you think. Last edited by CC's; 01-27-2005 at 01:15 PM. Reason: fix a word....

That's a good decision although I'm sure you are disappointed. My breeder said you have a bigger female and breed with a small male if you want smaller pups. Sounds right, don't you think?

I know your supposed to have a bigger female to breed with a small male. My new male that I'm getting is only going to be 2-3 lbs full grown. and I'm sure she would only have 1 puppy. maybe 2. but I wasn't going to breed her to sell the pups. I'm hoping she will gain more weight, by the time I breed her. If she doesn't then I won't breed her. that is what I was thinking of doing. but time will tell. and if not then I will get a bigger female or find a bigger female to breed my male with. so for right now we will say I'm not breeding her.

in heat How do the puppy pads work for dogs in heat? Do you change them after pottying the dog or just few times a day? Tasha is starting to bleed for the first time. All day, she plays for a few short mins then lays down, like she doesn't feel well. I feel so bad for our little girl!

What I did is went to the pet store and bought her doggie diapers and they come with pads just like our mini pads and she just went potty in that i bought three of the doggie diapers so i didn't have to wash just one every night. worked great, she even ran to the pad to go potty i guess she doesn't remember she has the doggie diaper on. then at night i would take it off when she was in her crate. lasted about 3 wks her heat cycle.

| Not trying to be negitive but, You need at least a 5lb dog to have pups naturally. smaller females are more likely to have c-sections. The risk people take are great sometimes, say you breed your female theres only one pup but, you have to have c-section something goes wrong and u lose both. I've seen small males with larger males in bloodline throw some pretty good sized puppies. Good luck with what ever you decide to do. and I do breed yorkies.

that is okay to be negitive I was just answering tashasgmommy message on the pads and what I did for my female and getting the doggie diapers.. for her female. And I was not going to breed my little female unless she gained more weight. Both of her parents are 3 lbs. and the mother popped them out like popcorn she only had 2 thou.
