| Do Yorkies normally have webbed feet? I have a 17 week old Yorkie and his feet are really, really webbed. (and big) I just noticed this. He is also quite large at 4 months he is already 10lbs. I have AKC papers for him and have been told it is possible for them to get this large. What's up with the webbies though? Can he swim? I can find little info online about this for Yorkies. Any help would be appreciated |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Yorkies were never breed as water retrieving dogs. The standard for yorkies is 4 - 7 pounds...I'm not certain why anyone would tell you a 10 lbs 4 month old was a normal range.

| I know what the "standard" is and that they aren't bred for water. I knew he would get larger than that (his parents are big) I have some pics in my photo album. Just wondering about the feet though. Does anyone have a Yorkie with webbed feet? |

| I think my Josie's feet are webbed!! She does like to swim, too! lol The OP was asking a question about the feet, not if he is purebred. I looked at the album pics and he is definitely all yorkie....just a big boy! I know what the OP means about webbed feet, and I had someone look at one of mine, and they said they are just big feet. | Have you sent in the AKC papers on him and what do they say? I'm sure you might not have a yorkie if he has web feet.

| If he's not.. He sure thinks he's one. I guess my initial reason for the question was because we are going river rafting (very mellow river) and it will be his first water experience aside from the bathtub. He loves to take showers with me. So I guess I am trying to guess if he will swim or not. If not, he will have to just stay in the raft with his little life jacket on. But my guess is with those humungous clod hopping feet of his that consequently also appear to be webbed. He may just turn out to be part mermaid |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Having webbed feet has nothing to do with not being 100% Yorkie, some humans are born with webbed feet and this phenomenon can occur spontaneously. If someone bred your dog some of the offspring would in all probably have webbed feet. These offspring could be bred again till all resulting offspring had webbed feet. This sort of thing happens all the time naturally in nature where a certain trait is beneficial to survival. In dogs, humans have acted in the natural selection process, and the result is the different breeds that at one time all resembled the wolf. Newfoundland, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Portuguese Water Dog, Field Spaniel, and German Wirehaired Pointer are among the breeds selectively bred to have webbed feet. It is possible that your dog has one of these breeds in his background especially since he is also a little on the large size, although Yorkies were at one time 15 pounds. Many breeders have been known to fudge on the AKC applications, and now that DNA is in use, this will happen less in the future. It would be interesting to know if he enjoys the water. Welcome to Yorkietalk, we have all sorts of unusual little guys here.

| I hear some yorkies like to swim in my case Yoda loves the sprinklers and his puppy pool but I've never filled it enough that he could swim in it (he to is a teapot at around 12lbs). However we took Faith to the creek last year and my husband was standing on a rock in it and she tried to walk to him and walked right into it and sunk about 1 1/2 feet to the bottom and stayed there just looking around like what just happened to me (you could see the bubbles coming from out of her nose) he picked her out by her harness. We don't let her near water now unless completely supervised.
