| Yorkie in heat I really could use some advice on my female Yorkie. I am having trouble finding any good literature on breeding my female. I have a few breeders that have given me some information. My female is 1 year and has started bleeding. We wanted to breed her with our male who seems to be more than ready! I am concerned with the weight issue. She is 5.5 and he is 9.5. Two different breeders said that was fine. My male (Winston) came from a 7 lb mom and 11 lb dad. Other people have mentioned Yorkie females usually have to have c-sections. Could anyone help answer some questions? Where can I find good literature Fast! Does anyone have opinions on the weight issue. I don't want to take a chance on her getting in trouble and jeopardizing her life. We love our Yorkies and would love to have a few more playing around in our house. Thanks for any advice you have. | I am no breeder or a pro on this subject but since you asked for our insight I can atleast tell you what I have learned. I too months ago atleast thought about breeding Schatzie. I sat down and wrote out the pro's and con's of doing so then I got with my breeder friend who gave me more insight then I could have ever dreamed of. After doing all this I found out it was just way to many odds of things that could go wrong with Schatzie that I personally chose not to. The con's definatley outweighed the pro's. Plus now with her situation of Perthes Disease in her hip she is in no way able to breed as it is hereditary. I hope you research long and hard and find the info you need that will help you make up your mind on whether to breed or not. I have heard and read that the male should be a lot smaller than the female however, but again I am not a vet. The list of bad situations that could arrise from breeding for a hobby or just to get cute pups is so very very long and I personally was just wanting to take the risk of putting Schatzie in harms way. Best of luck with your research, I am sure other Yorkietalk member's will give you plenty of known web site's to research and info too. I wish I would have saved the list on con's that my breeder gave me as she is very much familiar with all this, however I did not keep it. I would forward it to you had I saved it. Darn it!! Good luck! |

| My advice is Don't! Yorkies shouldn't need a C-section but it does sometimes happen. Your male is way to large for your female. Also even if a small male is used unless his family members are small you could still have a larger pup than the Dam can pass. Then your looking at a c-section ($400-1200 vet costs) if you don't lose your female on the way to the vet at 2am (they always seem to labor in the middle of the night). With his large parents chances are she will have larger pups. She is also still young, best to wait until the 2nd heat. That also gives you lots of time to research breeding. |

| I am not an expert, but I agree with the above posts....the male is way to large. Don't risk your girl's life with this male. The mentors that my family has worked with all agree that the male should be smaller. Also, the second heat is better...Good luck Jen

| I'm agreeing with the other posts. Coming form that big of parents, he could end up being twice as big as your female. You may want to talk to a breeder who a little bit smaller male and breed her (or AI) from them. Best of luck.

| 2 cents Just my 2 cents..but the two breeders who said it was fine to use a 9 pound male, please cross them off your list and never ask for their advise again.. May I ask where you are located? |

| In agreement with all, please put this off until you've done more research. Your male is far too large to be bred to this girl and any experienced yorkie breeder would have told you so immediately. Be very careful to keep them separated to prevent accidents...belly bands and diapers won't do it, crates or separate rooms are safer. She is also very young for a first breeding, we usually wait for 18 months/ second heat.
