What can I do to stop my dog from barking late at night?

I live in a small studio, so my Yorkie can hear every movement outside the studio. So, at night, when someone is walking in the hallway by our door or the newspaper is delivered early in the morning, my dog barks like crazy. It has been effecting my sleep really badly.

What can I do regarding this problem?

When i moved in with my BF his dogs would wake me up too. I started getting them use to noises by playing different music, getting them use to loud sounds etc… now they really don't bark unless someone is at the door or is at our fence. When we trained our horses we used the same concept of getting them use to noise. I don't mind them barking when someone is near our home, but not at every little noise.
Hope it helps a little, if not there are always ear plugs, which i have to use at times because of the neighbors.
