Should I consider shipping my puppies? - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Ok here is my problem... I live in the big old redneck state of TN...I have 2 AKC males that will be ready for new homes at the end of July.. I made a website and everything but I put on my site, No Shipping... Now I am having second thoughts since I may be able to find better, more suitable pet homes in other states...Alot of people around here want to breed whatever they can and even if I sell them on spay/neuter contracts, someone may end up breeding them anyway and registering them CKC.. As some of you know from some of my other posts, noone really cares about animal cruelty in this state and animal control is not concerned as long as there is food and water...I want my little guys to go to happy homes where they will be spoiled and loved as pets...Preferably with people with small dog experience...If I change my website and offer shipping to approved homes only, would that be a bad idea? Also, is my price high for pet quality?? I have them at $850 but they come with a nice puppy package and shots..My vet starts them at 6wks so they will have 2-3 sets...Opinions please!!!!

i think your price is about right. prices have really dropped recently. as far as shipping, it depends on how much your puuppy weighs. You also need to be aware that the weather plays a huge factor in if we can ship or not. Too hot certain times of Summer, like right now, and too cold in the winter. While some airlines let you ship down to 20 degrees, I wouldn't want my puppy to be shipped that cold. You could tell them they are welcome to fly to your airport and pick them up.

I think your price sounds about right. I wouldn't go any higher. I personally would not ship, especially in the summer. I applaud you for caring what kind of homes your puppies go to. I'm surprised you are having difficulties doing that in TN. I live in AL, by the way.

Well they are only 4 wks so I am not even taking deposits on them, I just figure that noone is interested because of the spay/neuter contract.. It could also be that I only have boys but I am so worried about finding them perfect homes.. I changed my website to say that shipping would be at my discretion but I never thought about it being to hot.. I was going to cross the bridge on how and when to ship if it came up but I am glad I know now.. I can say that if I had a good feeling about the home, then I would not mind shipping..But not if it is going to be dangerous for the pup...

When the time comes check airline schedules. You may be able to deliver the puppy to the new owner's airport for what it would cost to ship or sometime just a bit more. I have also had new owners fly to my airport and I met them there with the puppy. I really enjoy getting to meet the new owners in person.

The breeder we got Nahla from (Nolen's Yorkies - love them!!!) offered to fly with the puppy in the passenger cabin rather than shipping it the cargo way - there's no climate control down there and who wants to do that to a puppy anyway? We just drove from Maryland to Georgia - Helen was nice enough to drive up from Florida and meet us.

Maybe you will find the perfect yorkie parents that will fly to you? If they must fly, carrying them on is a lot more comfortable than cargo shipping.

I think you have a fair price for your puppies. I live in Tennessee also, and I understand what you mean about the way most people feel about their pets here. I have four yorkies. Three males and one female. My little girl weighs 2.9 lbs, and everyone always asks me why will I not let her have puppies? That drives me crazy. I got my last three puppies from out of state. They were shipped to me. One in February, the other two in May. My puppies arrived safe, but there were no weather issues. Go with your gut when it comes to your babies. They are so special. Good luck

have you thought of charging for delivery and flying your puppies yourself, and meeting them at the airport... i think i would do that.... but i have some free airline tickets..

If you are concerned about someone possibly breeding them, then get them neutered before they go to their new homes. Thats the only way to 100% ensure that they aren't bred.

Amanda, I would NEVER EVER ship my pups. I know a lot of people do with varied levels of success, but I am way too careful with my guys to ship them. I am more than willing to work out something as far as transportation goes, I have even offered to fly with my pups to a destination too far to drive.

I live in Georgia and have never had a problem with qualified responsible forever homes for my kids. Not all people living in Tennessee are "rednecks"

. Your prices seem very fair for good healthy pet-quality Yorkies.

Well, I live in "the big old redneck state of Tennessee" too and it isn't all that bad! A lot of people do care about animal cruelty and my local animal control does respond and take action when contacted. I know because I have contacted them myself and saw them arrive and do something. Of course you want the best for your puppies and that's good, but I don't think your problem finding good homes is any different because you live in Tennessee.

i read on this forum recently that 6 weeks might be too young for shots.. many are starting at 10 weeks with first set.. is this correct?

I have shipped before (only one puppy so far and one adult, but two more puppies in a few weeks) and they did just wonderful. It is scary though and all day you will be in knots until the new owners call you, but they have always did very well. Continintal airlines is the only one that has temp. controlled so you may have to dive a while for them as this time of year it's hot!

People who are not impulse buyers will drive or fly to the home to get a puppy. I flew to TN. and got Zada and I flew Zada's first cousin, Azrael, along with the same breeders neighbor, out here to CA. I would never ship a puppy!
As far as shots go, it is not a good idea to get those at 6 or 8 weeks of age.

The breeder I got both these girls from had them spayed before she let them go. I think that is fantastic. It will insure those babies are not bred. She also had them bile acid tested.
