Bulldog, bad idea?

I have two yorkies. I am going to move to a larger house. We are considering to get a larger dog as a watch dog. Because bulldog is very popular and looks scary , I want to buy a bulldog. I talked with a few breeders for a bulldog puppy. They are concerned because bulldog are pretty rouch player. Yorkie is easily get injured.
Are there anybody have experiences? Any other options for larger dog?

I would recommend not getting a bulldog, even if they get along with your yorkies they could easily accidentally hurt or kill your yorkie. Plus if you get a jumper their sheer weight rips into your skin when they are just excited to see you, plus the vast majority of them snore and snore loud. My dad used to keep a door bell under our bull dogs bed and the ringer next to his bed so when the dog woke everyone up from snoring he could ring the bell from bed and go back to sleep. LOL
I am not sure what to recommend though, if you are looking for touch looking maybe a boxer? If easily lovable and gentle maybe a golden retriever? Both of which we have never owned....

Golden retriever is too cute to be a watch dog. If they see someone, they may kiss them to death.
Well, Boxer is very strong willed. I am afraid I won't train them well. then end up bite me.

My older yorkie had a German sheppard sister he was only about 5month old when we brought him home and our german sheppard was a rescue she was 6years old and they got along fine, one of my neighbors used to doggysit for me and she had a great dane pup never had any issues with bigger dogs. i think you have better luck getting an older dog than a pup but if you are looking for a watch dog mainly i would rather just get a house alarm.

I have 4 yorkies ages ranging from 14 months to 3 yrs old & 1 Blue American Pit Bull puppy 6 months old.

I wasn't my choice at all to have a Pit!!! With the terrible reputation that hangs over their heads. But did ALOT of research.
My son brought a 2 month old Pit puppy home after moving out of a girl friends home a few months ago.
We battled with should we keep it or NOT!!! - We tried selling her in the local newspapers for a month - but no luck at the time.
Well we still have Skye - she is 6 mths old & weights 45 lbs now.
It takes alot of hard work to make it work out & is ongoing day to day.
Skye sleeps inside at night & stays outside during the day in a large fenced in back yard. We put her on a leash everytime the Yorkies are around her (even in the house)!
She is still a puppy, is very active & could hurt them.

Pitt bull is way more aggressive than bulldog.
It must be hard to watch him to prevent aggressive behavoir.
Not sure what other options I'll have.

Would you Believe! the Yorkies are the agressive ones not the Pit!!! Yes it is True in our case!!!
I had a trainer come over to my home to teach us & the dogs how to deal with this.The methods she uses is like Cesar Millan The Dog Whisperer on National Geographic channel.
I have been training the Pit with the Petsmart Training Program. I had saved all my paperwork when scruffy went to school.
I have been watching "It's Me or The Dog" on Animal Planet
VEry Very Helpful!!! It plays on Saturday nights at 7 pm & 10 pm. Also weekday mornings at 8 pm. I record them so I can go back to them.

I had English bulldogs once. They are not the greatest of guard dogs. Most of them are just happy go lucky type dogs. If you live in a hot area in the summer, they cant stay outside as the heat can kill them. They have huge amounts of health problems so you need to be very careful and only buy one from a reputable breeder that stands by his/her dogs. A few health problems are: spina bifida, cherry eye, too small trachea, collapsing trachea, skin problems,digestion problems and hip dysplasia. Bulldogs cant swim, they will sink like a rock. They are one of the sweetest breeds. I love their personalities. I think they are a little to rambunctious to be around Yorkies as they might step on one and injure it.

Its so funny to hear the excuses of peoples when they don't want a breed of dogs . Don't get this breed because he or she can hurt a Yorkie , in fact Yorkies can be very annoying for another breed .

Well I have a Standard Poodle and she is GREAT with Teddi and my parents have a German Shepherd and she is great with Teddi but a friend of mine has a mini bull dog and she is so rough and doesn't know her own strength. She uses her body to push into Teddi and I don't trust them playing together at all. She is a nice dog but just too tough for Teddi. I think the dogs that are the short stocky types (bull dogs, french bull dogs, pugs, etc) need to be around their own type - they aren't aware of their own strength!

I have a friend with an English Bulldog and another with an American Bulldog. My gang says no to bulldog anything. They don't like them. I think they are intiminated by the size...it's certainly not the bulldogs' temperaments.
