| My groomer won't cut my baby's hair??? I was sooo excited to bring my baby Simba to the groomer for his first time today! He is almost 6 months old now, and his hair was starting to cover his little eyes. I decided to stay with a puppy cut. I arrive at the groomer, and told them I wanted a puppy cut, but they said he was too young to cut. All they ended up doing was trimming the hair around his eyes and private areas. Nothing else was cut. Is this standard? Is 6 months still too young for a puppy to get a haircut? Also, does any of your babies have a little brown ring around it's nose like Simba? Here's a pic of Simba's first semi-haircut! |

| Hi, I groom my own babies, so I'm not much help with this matter. I just wanted to say that I think your little one is adorable.

| Simba is so cute!! While I wouldn't think that 6 months is "too young" for a first grooming (we took ours earlier than that), if it was his first time, sometimes groomers will not do a full groom the first time. It's important to make that first grooming a positive experience with no stress to set up good grooming for the future. Our groomer didn't do much the first times, just sort of got them used to her and the instruments and going, etc. Maybe that's what she really meant. But aside from all that, Simba is so cute!!

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I'm not a groomer but can think of no reason why at 6 months a groomer wouldn't cut Simba's hair, unless they thought there wasn't enough length. But that should be your decision, if you want it shorter. Simba is adorable and I have seen the little brown ring before on other yorkies.

| From a Groomer I am a groomer who ownes and operates my own shop, and I can agree with the poster that says 6 monthes is a hard age to get the first grooming on ANY dog..If the groomer said it was to young what she probally meant was that she would not cut all the hair into a puppy cut at this age,,,many groomers wont even attempt to start a dog at grooming if they have not been groomed before this age several times, most like to do a dog at 6-10 weeks old then every 6 weeks get a maintence groom and let the puppy get used to the sounds smells and noise along with training to stand sit and just general form a bond to some degree such as how its going to be with other dogs barking and all the other things that people dont think of that is part of a good grooming such as ear cleaning nail trimms and hair cut from pads not to mention potty trails and belly area..Some groomers dont like to cut yorkies because they do tend to be a little more aggresive if they have not been trained at an early age for this experience...I know that most think awww the little baby hows he going to be bad but rule of thumb the smaller the dog the bigger the attutide,,,I would prefer to do a rott before a yorkie thats never been groomed before...Just my opinion,,,please dont take it personally I am just wanting to explain where the groomer might be coming from,,these things are relationships with dog and groomer and its hard to start at 6 monthes with ANY dog, especially yorkies cockers and schnauzers they all tend to be very fisty at 6-12 monthes old...Hope you find a groomer though that will work with you I would but I would require two visits with me to get the puppy used to things before I attempted to cut it shorter into a puppy cutt...

I Love My Lil' Punkin's Donating Member | First of all, OMG....your Simba is just soooooo soooooo CUTE!!!! I'm serious! What a DOLL!!! I don't think he looks like he needs a haircut at all to be honest, lol! I think he is absolutely darling just the way he is! But ok, I know that doesn't answer your question lol I have no idea really, because I did have my Stedman groomed for the very first time at FIVE months old...and the groomer never said anything to me at all about him being so young, so I really have no clue Sorry that I wasn't more help P.S. - About the "brown ring" around his little nose...that will go away in time My best friends female Yorkie had it when she was younger and it eventually completely disappeared.

| Thank you for all of your replies!!! Little Lexi, thanks for giving me your input from a groomer's perspective! I've never thought about the importance of the relationship between the groomer and the puppy. I love YT!! |

| Hot Rod has been to the groomers twice. First time they did his face and head, a little off the body and back area. The 2nd time I have them do a puppy cut all over and they said that he was so good, he sat there and closed his eyes for them when they did his face. So I think that getting used to and trusting the person is a big part of it. I see the lady who grooms him all the time, they also have supplies and she holds him everytime we go there.

| Im glad to see another groomer replied to this. Building a relationship is important with a pup and you dont want to make his first grooming experience pure "torture" with all those weird grooming tools.

| Simba is a real doll! I've had all my yorkies first haircuts (usually a full shave) when they were 5 to 6 months old... I like to get rid of the puppy coat and see what's underneath. I've never had the groomer tell me any of them were too young or small. Never had a problem. I guess all groomers are different though... better safe than sorry, I guess.
