| Walking outside/ problems I went hiking this weekend and this couple in front of me had a Yorkie, maybe a bit bigger than rocky, say 6 lbs. He was so happy. They got on the train and off they went. Their Yorkie was a happy camper walking by them. For some reason, when I take out Rocky, he is very stubborn and slow to move, checks everything out slowly. SO i cannt imagine him strolling along on a hike, or strolling along period. How do I teach him to run along with me??? He is 1.5 years old. More of a house dog, which might be the problem, but I am taking him out everyday no and he loosened up a bit, but still. Thanks |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | You will just have to keep at it. He is in awe at this point since he was more of a house dog. The outside has so much for them to smell and see they kind of go on sensory overload.

Want to change dogs? LOL Buddy would live outdoors if I let him. Maybe some just like walking and other's like to chill. Try taking him for walks everyday and just make them longer after a couple of days until he gets use to just walking along with you. If this does not work you have yourself a couch potato~! | |

| Haahaha...... He is not a couch potato, he runs around at home and barks, and plays with toys. I guess the outside is too new for him. I'll keep at it and keep taking him outside, hope it will help. Thanks!!! |

| It's easy now when the spring finally is here... Pepper could live outside too, but he has no problem going back in... When we go out, he gets very excited and pulls but after about 10 minutes, he gets under control and walks nicely by the side. The only way is to keep walking them , I walk Pepper at least 1.5 hour on the weekends, about 40 minutes during the week.

| Hey Remus, I have the same problem too! I got Abby in September and by then it was too chilly for her to go out since she was so small and didnt have all her shots. So almost all winter she was home. And now that the weather is nice I bring her out and she is slow, fast, slow, fast not one specific pace. But everyday after work I take her out for 1hour or 2 and make her walk. She is slowly getting used to it. Try doing that. BTW, did anyone notice that the ones who answered this post were from NYC... I guess we all have this problem. Its tough but remember spring is here and they can all have fun!

| Well regarding NYC. Those who live in smaller towns or out of town and have a nice house with a back yard have the luxury of letting the monkeys roam around the property. IN nyc, living in an apartment its different. Winter was long, and Rocky was home most of the time. Even now, I have to drive for 5 minutes to a park for him to walk around, I dont want him walking on a sidewalk next to the building, and the back yard is not the best either. |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | I think Rocky will come around if you keep at it. Try to find ways to make the walk fun. Maybe bring a toy. Or run short distances and treat when he keeps up. An obedience instructor recently advised me to take the walk at my pace, not his. Let him stop three times to pee, and don't wait forever. Give him a chance, then move on. Otherwise, they will be inclined to stop at every bush and tree and telephone pole you pass.
