| I'm glad you asked about the human shampoo as I've been wondering, too. I had thought that the pH was different in human and dog shampoos. If that isn't the case, I would much rather use my Pantene to keep their coats shiny and fresh smelling. |

| Just my two-cents: I use Biolage moisturizing shampoo and conditioner on my babies. I have both a cottony-coat boy and silky-coat female and swear by this "human" shampoo. It keeps their coats soft and moisturized and smells great too. I have tried a few doggie-shampoos, but they don't seem to moisturize as well as this one and I get a lot of compliments on both of their coats. Wow...after re-reading that, it kinda sounded like an infomercial..haha.

| I'm beginning to believe that my newest one has a wiry coat and he definitely needs something that softens and shines. |

| If they do have a different pH then what does that do to a dog? |

| Supposedly it will dry out their skin. I'm hoping to find out differently from those who actually use the human variety and which types they use. |

| I use to use Johnson's Baby Shampoo on Annie, as even puppy shampoo would make her scratch like crazy. However, I do believe it dried out her skin some and I would use a conditioner from the vets office that was for dogs. I'm looking for a good shampoo to use on Gracie. She's only 10 weeks old and I don't want to start any skin problems if I can help it. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Please don't use human shampoo on dogs. It can lead to serious skin problems. Skin problems are much easier to prevent than to cure. Just because your dog is showing no symptoms yet, doesn't mean it's safe. Remember you are not just cleaning their hair you are caring for their skin. Skin problems with dogs are all to frequent. There are many great dog shampoos and conditioners; it doesn't need to be an expensive one. This link give some good information about the proper ph. http://members.cox.net/jrogan/shampoo.html

| hmm...I will have to talk to my vet again I guess because after trying 3 separate "dog" shampoos, my babies had dry skin and flakes. She told me to try a more moisturing shampoo and I have not had problems since I used the "human " shampoo. And this was 2 years ago. I would change it if there was a problem, but like I said. Their coats and skin have never been better. I wonder why people use tail and mane shampoo then??? weird. Quote:

| Duurstede shampoo is too expensive and over rated. There are a few human grade shampoos that do seem to work really well on a Yorkie coat. When I went to watch the Yorkies at the dog show, there was a trainer there I got to talk with about grooming and such. She was showing a beautiful male and his coat was amazing. She uses Neutrogena CLEAN Replenishing moisturizing shampoo. It's in a clear bottle and the shampoo is pink. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...7-28-07020.jpg |

I Love My Lil' Punkin's Donating Member | I would highly recommend that you DO NOT use human shampoo on your dogs. Human shampoo is just that - HUMAN shampoo and should be used on us, not our babies as it can cause some serious itching and skin problems. I would suggest trying either Minksheen, Petsilk, Buddy Wash and Buddy Rinse or Cranberry Fields - all are wonderful pet shampoos

I didn't post the link to recommend Duurstede shampoo, (I know nothing about it) but to give more information on why the proper ph is important. "The ph is very important. People are 5.5 ph which is much more acidic than dogs which are 7.0. Using shampoo that's less than 7.0, which is alkaline, can cause the hair to dry out and look fried over a period of time." I have read many good things about all the shampoos stedmansmommy recommends.
