6 Days left!!!

Hello all! I'm getting my yorkie in 6 days and I spoke to the breeder today...she said that my little girl is 1lb and 3 oz. She is 7 weeks old...how big do you think she will be full grown? I'm still undecided as to what food to give her when she gets here...the breeder gives her a diet of cooked food and royal canin. Also I haven't bought anything yet except one toy...I really need advised on what I should have by the time she gets here. ie. beds, bowls...etc.

i am a first time yorkie mom...i have had my little boy for 8 months now....start slow.....eukanuba makes a great puppy kibble that is small....also get a crate that she can grow in.....one that can be sectioned off would be the best....get some wee wee pads...........and a good brush....also maybe a slicker brush...any petstore will be able to tell you the best ones.....a soft bed in her crate with a wee pad folded in the corner.....for the first 4 or 5 days watch about having too many people around her.......and keep the crate in the room with you to where she can see you or at least hear you.....a soft rope toy is wonderful for there growing teeth and they love to play tug of war.....have fun they are a blessing from God.....

Congrats on your boy and thank you very much for the advice! I was also wondering where I should put her at night. I know she will cry the first few nights cause she won't be use to being alone. I really want to make it as least painful for her as possible.

8 weeks is awfully young.... 8-12 weeks is when puppies gain proper potty/play/bite skills by being with their mother and littermates. Some people have brought puppies home this early and been fine but others have had a harder time with training. Can you see if the breeder will let you wait another month?

Wow that's really young. They are awful tiny and fragile at that young age.

Believe me, the one I got at 7 weeks was 100 times easier to housebreak than the one I got at 11 weeks, which, she's now 7 1/2 mos. and still won't poop on the pee pad..The first yorkie I got so young, and she was housebroken all the way long before 5 mos.
Congrats on the new baby..make sure you have an xpen or something to keep her in while you're away from her..Your puppy will probably be beween 4 and 4 1/2 pounds fully grown..

That is exactly why I asked the breeder to let me have her at 8 weeks. Even though she was reluctant to let her go before 11 weeks she agreed to it as I know how to care for one so young.
I read so many things that said it was easier to bond with and train the dog if its younger. You become their mother and they accept you in that role. I'm so excited...I don't know if I'll last the week!

my guess about her weight would be 5 pounds.. this based on my dogs weight at that age

how big are the parents?

The housebreaking issue is not guaranteed to be easier, but it is guaranteed that your yorkie will be more sociable if she stays with her mom and littermates longer. For sure she will bond with you earlier or later, but she can have problems socializing with new people if taken away at an early age. I undestand your anxiety, but please give it a second thought, specially because the breeder is willing to keep her untill 11 weeks old.

The socializing is not such an issue for me because my very good friend and next door neighbor has two dogs and I see her almost every day. Her mother lives 4 houses away from us and she also has 2 dogs. I see them so much I know that my dog will be well socialized. If I didn't see her so often I would really be worried about that. I know the breeder is worried about it also because she really loves her dogs and stays in their lives after they come home with us. I will make sure she will be able to see her birth mother also. I do want to do the best thing for her...I think a second thought is always worth it!

The mother is 3 1/2lbs and the father is 4lbs

If you know how to care for one so young, why did you ask what you should all have for her when she comes home? I don't mean this to sound mean.

I got mine at 11 weeks and still had a problem with her eating and she had to be taken to the vet for hypoglicemia. And I too know how to take care of little ones. Please reconsider waiting at least a few more weeks. They need the extra time with their mom and littermates. I know how hard the wait is, but it will be better for her in the long run.

Socialization is just not about being "friendly" to other dogs -- like I said, it's also about play/bite inhibition, potty training, many many other important lessons that can only be taught by a mother and litter mates.

Well I know how to take care of them...I just wanted to know what type of bed is best and what bowls are the best...I could get any old one and it would be good but I want to get one that will make her life the easiest. I've had other dogs that I've raised from when they were born until they died but the other dogs where cocker spaniels and labs which are much bigger dogs.
I basically wanted to know which is the best hight for a bowls, beds, gates, for such a tiny dog. Things that I wouldn't really have read in books or on the net. I just needed a little extra info...I do want to give her the best start in my family and I will consider everything!

This does make a big difference. The dogs you have raised have been larger dogs. These tiny yorkies are very fragile and can get low blood sugar very easily as I have learned. I thought I knew everything I needed to know and people warned me to wait a bit longer to get my Myah. She was almost 12 weeks, short by 3 days....and I still wound up having problems with her. We are so passionate about the breed that we just want to give the best advise that we can to help you out. We can't wait to see pictures of her when you get her. I just wanted to also welcome you!!! We are so glad you found this forum...you will learn lots from the experts here.
