| Akc is it worth it to register my boy with the AKC if i'm planning on getting him neutered?? i have all the paper work, i just need to send it in with the money. but since he won't be able to make babies, i was thinking i shouldn't spend the money because i know in my heart that he's AKC quality. he just won't be on record. what do you all think?

| I was just wondering how does an AKC paper and pedigree identify that the dog is yours? Wouldnt a micro-chip or tattoo be better for identification purposes? In my opinion, registering the dog is only a personal preference. Its nice to have and the pedigrees are fun to look at. But if you ever want to compete in conformation, rally, or other AKC events, you will need to have him registered. Thats always a great way to spend quality time with you baby and have lots of fun and meet nice people. |

| Chewy is not registered and he is microchipped. He is neutered and I won't ever sell him so I don't care about it. I haven't with Sadie either, and as soon as she gets spayed She will get the microchip also.

| My babies came from a family that bred their female to her mother's Yorkie sire. They did NOT do the AKC since they do not breed for 'profit'... they register with America's Pet Registry. For me it was not important if they had their 'papers' or not... it was MORE important that they came from a family home environment and were raised in the house and not in a kennel. Their wonderful dispositions were most important to me!

| I've sent AKC money one time, and NEVER again..those papers to me don't mean a hill of beans...I was told I had an AKC pomeranian years ago, sent the papers in, but, when my friend saw my pom(she's always had poms), she laughed and laughed...so, I sent pictures to akc, I figured this lady had them AKC and I sent money in, etc for mine, but, they gave me the run around, and supposedly couldn't find my pictures...I don't breed, I don't show, and therefore, won't give them my money..I've seen a lot of dogs that have akc, that I can look at and tell they're not purebred....jmo |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I think it's extremely important to register your dog. First, it doesn't cost very much, under $30.00, and if you have a microchip, you can register that # as well. Many breeders will claim that the dogs they are selling are AKC eligible. They will ask the buyer, "Why register if you're not going to show?" However, if the buyer goes ahead and tries to register, they find out that the seller's dogs were never eligible. I've read about this happening so many times. In other words, it helps keeps sellers honest. Just because a breeder is selling the puppies of two registered dogs, it does not mean the puppies are automatically eligible; they have to meet other requirements. AKC may not be perfect, but it the best thing going, and registering your dog supports the AKC. Also, with the future of DNA testing we may be able to isolate some of the genes responsible for heredity problems. Your dog's linage is important in predicting future health problems. It's not a status thing!!!! I'm hoping in the future the AKC can help put unethical breeders out of business.
