I am NEVER going to the groomer I just finished cutting toby's hair myself and i must say HE LOOKS GREAT!!!!, it is a little uneven (not much) and i only used a pair of old scissors!!! Guess i dont have to brave the petsmart groomer afterall, i cant BELIEVE how EASY it is! My brother took my digital camera so i will have to wait until sunday to post pictures, but i think im gunna keep his "look" even into adulthood..... Im so happy, he doesnt look like a ragamuffin anymore and i dont have to pay money to get his hair cut

That's a wise decision. I don't recommend taking yorkies to the groomer. I haven't had any horror stories as bad others on the board, but nobody does a very good job and they charge a lot of money (about $35). I've taken Bentley to two different groomer and haven't been impressed with either one. They don't really understand how to cut a yorkie the right way. For the past few months I have been cutting his hair myself with a scissors. I like it much better than anything done by the groomers and you're right, it's not that hard. I would like to figure out a good way to use clippers or something as it is getting harder to cut with a scissors when his hair gets longer.

Orinskye - I'm glad you were able to cut Toby's hair yourself! Be sure to post pictures when you get your camera back, I'd like to see them! Hercules is 4 months and I'm dreading when he needs to get a haircut and what not, so I'd like to see what others are doing. Brandi

Groomer I plan on taking Nala to the groomer once she is older. We take my other dog to a place called Waggin Tails and the lady that does it is a really nice women. I know her personally and I've have never heard anyone complain. She is responsible for starting a huge dog show here in our little (and I mean little) town. It draws thousands of people to our area. I'm sure she has groomed yorkies before, but just incase I'm going to take a couple of pics with me to show her what I want.

haircut I cut my yorkies too. I use clippers, and keep their body hair short, long around the head and legs. Trial and error. They come out cute! I got tired of going to groomers because of the money, but mainly because I hate to leave them anywhere.

this was a picture before i cut it... yyou cant really tell in the picture, but he was a real raggamuffin and his hair was pretty long (it looks shorter because i slicked it back for pictures , i like my lil man lookin fresh).... i didnt give any special cut (that i know of) all i did was close two fingers over his hair and snip the hair that came out the top of my fingers... il probably have new pictures on sunday, but you could also tell that he felt better after the haircut because he was struttin his stuff and being playful and hyperactive..... guess it was my fault for saying he was handsome His new cut trims up his face so hes not so scragaly and keeps most of that troublesome hair out of his eyes (oh wait, maybe thats why hes hyper, he can actualy SEE where he is going )... it is also a little shorter on his body (im gunna try iand cut a little more off his chest, adn i couldnt get his rear end really good, but i will get those too....eventually)

Hi ! When I cut Snoodles with the clippers, I just put the longest blade attachment on and went up her back and all around. including her legs. I hand cut her face with sissors, though, of course, Then about an inch around her anus and cut the hair shorter around her female genatalia, shaved her stomach and the top 1/3 of her ears and she was done. I am now leaving it grow out as it is so cold here in Montana. I feel sorry for her everytime she has to go to her thing outside. Brrrr, It must be awful for her.

Archie's grooming experience was a nightmare--for both of us!! I took him to the groomer down the street and she told me to leave him there for an hour or so and she'll call me when they're done. I didn't want to leave him because he has never been away from me with someone else for that long. But I did because she told me that I wasn't allowed to stay or Archie would not be "good." When I came back, Archie's hair was all really really short and he had bangs. And he was in a cage!! Archie has never been locked in anywhere before and he was in the corner shaking. As soon as I came in and the groomer opened the door, he ran up to me, and I had to walk down Queens Blvd. with Archie's arms around my neck, and he was shaking so much. Oh it was traumatizing! And he looked like such a freak, like he had crazy eyebrows and was evil. I vowed NEVER to take him to a groomer again.

That's just terrible! No matter how hard Snoodles may fight, I can take days to groom her if i need to. I'm with you, I would not want my baby to go through that! Spyder Gurl! I definately do put a sweater on her. Also at night before bed. I even made her a double fleece coat with a hood. But it gets really cold up here, and I worry about her feet even when she is out for just the few minutes it takes her to do her business. That is why I have been letting her hair grow out. It is sure at a shaggy look now, and have to stop myself from going ahead and clipping her. Wanted to see how she looked with the full Yorkie look, but it is hard to not just cut them in the puppy cut.

clipping It is good to learn to groom your own Yorkie. Be sure to learn to cut the nails, clean ears and trim around the rectum, keeps the stool from clinging. I trim the belly hair off, especially a male..long hair can become matted around the penis and cause infection..also a long hair can be retracked into the sheath and cause worse problems. Toby looks darling.

| The one thing I am not sure of how to do is to clean the ears. Can you tell me what you do, Yorkie Rose? I do pull the hair out of it with a tweesers, but I can't get my little finger into the canal to clean it and am afraid to stick anything else into it as she is so wiggley. would love any suggestions! | ears Dogs ears are not as delicate as the human ear in regards to the ear drum. The dogs ear canal is "L" shaped..you can not stick a Q-Tip straight in and puncture the drum as with a human...use a liguid ear cleanser..squirt some in and massage the base of the ear, then use a Q-tip to clean them out. I am not big on hair pulling. I know most vets want to remove the hair, but I have owned many Yorkies..rarely do I pull out the hair...I find if it causes no problem, leave it alone...same for anal glands. If the dog is prone to ear infection, then you will want to keep the ear dry inside..removing hair is best in those cases. After a bath you can use Flowers of Sulphur powder on a Q-tip and that will dry the ear canal fast and prevent infection...great product for any flop earred breed also. (druggist can order it..very cheap) I hope this helps you. |
